Tremendous levels of detail and an excellent portrayal of tonal colours in combination with an outstanding ability to create a stereo image. The Chameleon Silver Plus allows you to pick out and follow individual instruments without ever losing track of the music as a whole
What is it?
The Chameleon Silver Plus is a development of the long standing Chameleon 2. The critical changes are to the conductors, which are now silver plated, and the dielectric, which changes from polyethylene to Teflon®. There is an overall lapped shield, which is also silver plated and the outer jacket is royal blue. Like the Chameleon 2 there are four sets of stranded conductors but we now use one set to carry the signal and two more to carry the return. This configuration was stolen from the Anthem and is successful enough to be likely to make an appearance in other cables in our range. The conductors are twisted along the length of the cable.
Terminations
The Chameleon 2 was one of the most versatile cables in the Chord range and the Silver Plus is much the same. It can be terminated with RCA, XLR, Din plugs and quarter inch mono/stereo jacks. The RCA plugs are silver plated; the XLR plugs silver plated and the quarter inch jacks hard nickel-plated. Nickel plating has been fairly soundly dismissed in terms of sound quality in the Chrysalis section. However, it tends to be used on quarter inch jack plugs for two reasons. Firstly, it is very hard and will withstand repeated insertions. Secondly, the fact that jack plugs tend to be pushed in and pulled out frequently means that they are self cleaning to some extent. Each time a jack plug is pushed into the socket, the contacts rub against each other and remove oxidisation.
Uses
Almost everything. The Chameleon really is versatile and sits happily with all sorts of equipment. CD players, pre and power amps and long runs for active speakers all spring to mind. Chameleon is also an excellent interconnect for equipment with balanced (XLR) outputs and home studio applications.
How does it sound?
The Chameleon Silver Plus is an outstandingly neutral cable. It combines a whole range of abilities in a very balanced manner, excellent dynamics, plenty of detail, very neutral tone and outstanding ability to produce a strong stereo image. The wiring configuration gives excellent noise rejection and makes this a great cable for systems suffering from interference. The configuration and the silver/Teflon® construction mean that the cable takes quite a while to burn in and until the cable is burnt in it can sound slightly mechanical and a little hard. This will disappear over a period of two to three weeks.
While on the subject of burn in, all our research carried out so far points to the fact that you cannot quote a definite time in which a cable will burn in. The burn in time is dependent on what equipment is being used and also what type of music is predominantly played. High-energy dance music with lots of high frequency information would seem to offer the quickest results.

About The Chord Company
Silver-Plated Oxygen Free Copper Conductors
The Chord Company Chameleon Silver Plus features silver-plated oxygen free copper conductors. Silver has a lower resistance than copper. Plating or coating copper conductors with silver reduces the overall resistance to signal flow and prevents the copper from oxidising. This allows the conductor to perform better for longer distances. Silver plating will improve audio performance, improving clarity and detail in audio applications and delivering higher resolution in video applications.
The Chord Company is dedicated to offering excellence in audio and audio visual cable design. Chord products have earned numerous accolades in the audio and recording industries over the past two decades. Based in Salisbury UK, The Chord Company continues to drive cable design and technology to its limits with the majority of its spectacular array of performance products designed and made in the UK. |
