What is it?
Chord Epic is the successful marriage of Chord Odyssey and Chord Signature speaker cables. Strangely enough the first speaker cable The Chord Company experimented with shielding on was Chord Odyssey. The results were somewhat mixed and they went on to develop the first shielded speaker cable in the Chord range, the Chord Signature. Chord Signature proved conclusively that shielding speaker cable brought some serious improvements to sound quality. The success of Signature and the lessons learnt during its development meant an effective a high frequency shield was developed for the Chord Odyssey speaker cable.

The Chord Epic is a cost effective shielded cable with many of the performance characteristics of the markedly more expensive Chord Signature. The silver-plated multi-strand conductors are identical to those found in Chord Odyssey; likewise the Teflon insulation and silicone outer jacket. Around this is an overlapped foil and high-density braided shield and this combined shield is surrounded by a translucent outer jacket designed to minimise any mechanically induced interference.

Terminations
Unlike Signature, which due to its construction is complex and difficult to terminate, Epic Twin and Super Twin are relatively straightforward to fit every type of speaker connector to. Once the translucent outer jacket and foil and braid have been cut away the cable can be terminated as easily as Odyssey. Chord has correctly sized heat shrinks available to neatly finish the ends of the cable. Epic Twin and Super Twin are available fitted with gold-plated 4mm banana plugs, BFA (Camcon) or gold-plated spade connectors.

Epic Twin is a two-conductor cable, Epic Super Twin a four-conductor cable intended primarily for bi-wiring. However, Epic Twin can also be connected by joining the two negative conductors together at each end, likewise the two positive conductors. Terminated like this, Epic Super Twin works extremely well with single input speakers that are difficult to drive and will help to control the bass.

Uses
The high frequency effective shielding systems fitted to the Anthem 2 and the Chorus 2 bring very audible benefits to systems running Odyssey speaker cable. However, the benefits of running a good high frequency shielding system throughout the cables in a system bring real benefits to the overall sound and the musical coherence of the system they are fitted to. Epic is a perfect partner for use with both Chorus 2 and Anthem 2 and for that matter will not disgrace itself when used with Signature RCA or even Indigo. That said, the overall performance qualities of Epic and either Chorus 2 or Anthem 2 make for a cost-effective and serious upgrade to almost any system. Once again, some surprisingly affordable systems can really benefit from these cables.

How does it sound?
The shielding system around the cable brings the same sort of benefits to the sound of the system as the shields used on the interconnects and whilst the improvements to the high frequency performance of any system are obvious, it is the jump in performance across the bass region that really surprises people. The extra space around bass notes and the extra harmonic content really allow bass lines to breath properly and the true timbre of bass instruments is very obvious. The same effect can be heard on drums. This ability to accurately carry timbral information brings real benefits to cellos, violins and violas, not to mention acoustic and electric guitars. Micro-dynamic information arrives intact and complex rhythms are far simpler to follow and understand.

Note
When Epic Super Twin is wired in 2 to 2 configuration the running-in time effectively doubles. Patience is required to hear the speaker cable at its best.
