Chord Odyssey is one of the hi-fi industry’s favourite speaker cables and won the Hi-fi News Award for Best Speaker Cable five years in a row from 2001 to 2006. It is extremely compatible and performs really well across a huge range of systems. Odyssey is a very similar design to Chord Rumour but features larger conductors. This brings real improvements to the dynamics of sound and music, particularly in the bass. Cymbals are shimmeringly realistic, acoustic guitars and pianos have natural weight and realism. What Is It?

Chord Odyssey speaker cable is almost identical to Rumour. It features 19 strands of silver plated oxygen free copper per conductor surrounded by Teflon® insulation and twisted together; the major difference being the overall gauge of the conductors. Whereas Rumour uses 16 gauge conductors, Odyssey has altogether more substantial 12 gauge conductors and will carry significantly higher currents. Like Rumour, Odyssey was initially only available as a simple twisted pair design and it was only later that the silicon jacket was added. Odyssey is available as an installation product without the silicon jacket and in a two (Odyssey 2) and four core (Odyssey 4) version with the silicon jacket.

Terminations
Odyssey can be terminated with almost any style of termination. Chord‟s standard is either gold plated 4 mm Banana Plugs or BFA (Camcon) connectors. Under protest we will fit spade terminals, but our testing points to the fact that the Banana Plug sounds better and stays tighter for longer. No matter how much you tighten the spade connector it works loose over a period of time.

Uses
Like Rumour, Odyssey is extremely compatible and is used across a wide range of systems. Because of its compact construction, Odyssey is a great favourite with people installing high-end audio and home cinema systems. As a point of interest, for reasons of cost, people who need extremely long runs of speaker cable tend to fit cheaper cables because of the cost involved. Better quality cables can really come into their own when the length required are longer than average. It is worth encouraging customers to spend as much as they can in order to get the best performance from their system. With the increasing interest in multi-channel systems, one of the more common approaches is to use Chord Odyssey on the front left and right and centre channels and Chord Rumour or Chord Carnival Silver Plus for the surround speakers. Because of the strong family resemblance in all the cables, this is an entirely reasonable option.

How does it sound?
Odyssey brings real improvements to the dynamics of the sound, particularly in the bass, both in terms of weight and attack. This is also true of the mid and treble as well. Cymbals are noticeably more realistic and have greater weight and authority. The same is true of acoustic guitars and also pianos. The lower resistance of Odyssey also makes it a particularly good choice for longer runs.

Note
Odyssey 4 was designed not only as a bi-wireable cable but also as a high performance cable for use with single input speakers. In this case the two sets of conductors are connected together at each end. This produces a very powerful and dynamic sounding cable with real gains in the mid range. This is particularly impressive with pianos, saxophones and human voice. Detail and realism in this area are dramatically improved.

Silver-Plated Oxygen Free Copper Conductors

The Chord Odyssey Speaker Cable features silver-plated oxygen free copper conductors. Silver plated oxygen free copper is an excellent choice of conductor for both interconnects and speaker cable. Silver has a lower resistance than copper. Plating or coating copper conductors with silver reduces the overall resistance to signal flow and prevents the copper from oxidising. This allows the conductor to perform better for longer distances. Silver plating will improve both audio and video performance, improving clarity and detail in audio applications and delivering higher resolution in video applications. Used well and carefully matched with the correct insulation, silver-plated cables can allow you to enjoy higher levels of detail and an extremely neutral tone.

I must say I was first very skeptical on the advice that was given to me by Adam that this cable would be able to bring out the bass, mid-range and trebles compared to Carnival SliverScreen that I was using to connect my speakers. Upon connection, I was dumbfounded with the precise bass,mids and trebles. I had my misgivings but I am totally satisfied now no doubt the cables do sound a little sharp but knowing the characteristics of this cable. I am just compensating to reach 100 hours before before the cable is fully optimised. Once again. thank you Adam and Futureshop for the wonderful advice and service.

Fantastic service from future shop. Just instaled my chord odyssey cables(replacing QED silver anniversary) WOW!!!! Can changing a wire really make that much difference? Oh yes it can. Its like looking out of a window, with heavy net curtains, then removing the nets. A much clearer view. If you get my meaning. Was sceptical! If in doubt buy!!
