A coaxial design of very sophisticated construction, the signal conductor comprises of a solidcore conductor 0.33mm sq of 7N purity silver (99.999997%), perfectly circular in cross-section. There are no less than 3 screens to fully protect the signal from the deleterious effects of EMI, ESI and RFI induced distortions. Uniquely, this asymmetrical coaxial cable is also available in balanced (symmetrical) configuration. Here the centre core is positive phase, the inner screen negative and the outer screen becomes 'earth'
The signal conductor has a dielectric of ultra low loss Foamed Polyethylene. The return conductor and inner screen comprise of 100% coverage pure copper foil and a close-lapped braid of silver-plated Ultra-Hi Purity-OFC™. This is sheathed in a PTFE (Teflon) separator. The outer screen is a close-lapped braid of silver-plated Ultra-Hi Purity-OFC™ and is grounded at source end only.
The clever bit is the layer of Vibrakill™ Neoprene™ sandwiched between the outer screen and the soft PVC jacket, virtually eliminating the effects of microphony and contributing greatly to the preservation of the accuracy and integrity of the signal.
When wired 'pseudo-balanced' or single-ended, we use Ecosse's most sophisticated non-compressing, conjugate bracket RCA plug assembly-the awesome MACH3Ag Ultima frighteningly expensive constant-impedance Monocrystal™ Ag over Cu RCA plugs. A heavy, silver-plated brass body, with twin high tensile fixing screws, clamps the double-shielded assembly uniformly and without stress. This shield, which grips the cable, does so firmly but without compressing the cable, ensuring that the crucial characteristic impedance is maintained.- uniquely, their centre pins.
A word about there unique terminations: The terminations at the ends of cables are part of the transmission path and therefore vital to it. They must not impede the delicate audio signal as inappropriate termination on a cable changes the so called characteristic impedance (and other electrical attributes) of the cable.
To maintain the quality of the all-important interface between interconnect and component and compatibility between wire material and plug, Ecosse has developed there unique non-compressing constant impedance MACH3Ag Ultima deep silver plated RCA plug.
This state-of-the-art reference quality RCA plug consists of a centre pin and conjugate bracket shield* which together offer going and return paths for the audio signal. To maintain continuity and optimum conductivity, these contact points are made from silver plated Monocrystal ™ copper. The plug casing is precision machined from highest quality copper alloy and is deep-plated. This thick casing offers further shielding - effectively a second 'Faraday Cage' - and reduces the ingress and radiation of EMI, ESI and RFI 'noise' even further, to virtually zero.
The interface of shield* and casing is one of high mechanical impedance, dissipating energy and rendering microphonic effects negligible. The full assembly represents Ecosse's Audiophile Reference Grade RCA termination and we believe the Ecosse MACH3Ag Ultima RCAs to be the best available price wise, electrically, mechanically and aesthetically - anywhere!
*These shells/ shields are designed to perform a 5-fold function:
They provide a terminal to which the return/screen conductors can be firmly crimped and Super-soldered.
They incorporate tiny teeth that grip the cable firmly and evenly around its circumference without compressing the cable and thereby maintain the cable's characteristic impedance right up to the solder joint.
When assembled, they form a Faraday cage, screening the signal right up to and including the RCA socket.
They form a union of high mechanical impedance with the outer casing, dissipating energy and therefore rendering the plug immune to the effects of microphony.
They firmly locate and clamp the centre pin's polypropylene dielectric, which, in conjunction with the outer casing, results in a strong, stable and extremely durable structure.

When terminating, the solder joints are formed with Supersolder™, our new ultra high purity silver and tin alloy wire, together with our unique, passive organic flux, ensuring a joint with vanishingly low resistance, ultra low chemical contaminants and very high strength.

We are pleased to offer a free cable burn-in service for this cable when purchased through us. The Nordost VIDAR cable burn-in machine combines three different functions all in one operation:
- It neutralises charges that build up around the cables and the insulation
- It provides a very wide band and deep conditioning into the conductor core, which produces changes in the way signals pass through the metal.
- It ultrasonically conditions the surface of the conductors.
The VIDAR uses a proprietary combination of composite and complex signals to condition the cables. Parts of the signal oscillate at ultra-low frequencies, while other parts are in ultra-high ranges which extend beyond the range of video frequencies. The signal bounces in a ping-ping ball-like fashion from one end of the cable to the other. During the burn-in process, ultra-low frequencies penetrate deep into the core of the cable. The ultra-high frequencies zip along the surface. This method of signal transmission a set up beat harmonics, or heterodynes, between the two complex waveforms. In the digital domain, this would be referred to as aliasing products. These beat frequencies penetrate all layers of the cable.
The design of the circuitry also has a unique feature which drives electrons above the conductor into the dielectric (or insulation) area. The VIDAR not only sends ping pong signals along the cable, it also sends a similar signal from the centre core to the outer shield in the case of interconnect cables. This function neutralises the electrical charges discussed above.
So what does that all mean to me?
The end result of conditioning cables with the Nordost VIDAR is improved sound staging, increased detail, and an overall more musical presentation.
