Maintenance that pays for itself
Contact cleaning is the most effective thing in this section. Every plug and socket in a system oxidises over time, and the resulting resistance costs detail and dynamics. On a system that has sat untouched for years, cleaning and reseating every connection often gives a bigger improvement than the last cable upgrade did.
Use a product designed for electrical contacts rather than a general cleaner, apply it sparingly, and let it dry before reconnecting. Disconnect equipment from the mains first. Screen and cabinet cleaning fluids should be specific to the surface, since a fluid that is safe on a television panel is not necessarily safe on a lacquered speaker cabinet.
Cable management is the free upgrade most systems never get. Keep mains and signal cables separated, cross them at right angles where they have to meet, and avoid coiling excess length into a loop, which turns the cable into an aerial. Burn-in discs run a signal through a system to settle new cable, and are the practical option for cable that has already been installed. Anything bought here can have up to 96 hours of Vidar burn-in applied free before it ships, so a disc is only needed for cable bought elsewhere.
