Isolating below the frequencies that matter
Max Townshend's argument was that most isolation addresses the wrong frequency range. Spikes couple rather than isolate, and it is low frequency energy travelling through the floor that does the damage. His claim was that ground-borne micro tremors move a cabinet more than the driver does.
The Seismic Load Cell is the answer: a steel compression spring inside a damping jacket, free to move in three dimensions, tuned so that isolation begins at 3Hz. That sits far below anything audible, so everything above it is isolated rather than partly absorbed. Damped springs are what sit between a railway carriage and its bogies, for the same reason.
The Seismic Podiums put four Load Cells under a speaker and come in a range of sizes matched to cabinet weight, since the spring has to suit the load. The demonstration is simple: tap the floor beside a spiked speaker and watch it move, then do the same beside one on a Podium.
Townshend have been refining this since the 1990s from their base in Surrey, and also make cables, with the Isolda speaker cable having a long-standing following.
