Phono stages and amplification
Phono stages are the busiest part of this category, and for good reason. A cartridge produces a tiny signal that needs both a large amount of gain and accurate RIAA equalisation, and the phono stage built into a budget integrated amplifier is rarely the equal of a dedicated unit.
Match the phono stage to the cartridge. Moving magnet cartridges need around 40dB of gain and a 47k ohm load. Moving coil cartridges produce far less output and need 60dB or more, plus loading options that suit the specific cartridge. A switchable MM and MC stage covers both and makes sense if you expect to change cartridges.
For the rest of the category, the useful question is power delivery rather than headline watts. Speaker sensitivity and impedance decide how much current an amplifier has to supply, and a nominally powerful amplifier that struggles with a difficult load will sound worse than a modest one that copes.
