Ethernet Cable — Backbone Infrastructure
Cat6 (or Cat6a for future-proofing) ethernet is the foundation of every multi-room system. Invest in quality cable here — once installed in walls it is expensive to replace. Supra Cat8, AudioQuest Forest ethernet and Atlas Hyper ethernet all offer screened options for electrically noisy environments.

HDMI Cables — Sources to Matrix
Short HDMI runs from sources to the central matrix switcher. HDMI 2.0 is sufficient for 4K/60Hz distribution; HDMI 2.1 for 4K/120Hz gaming. Quality matters less for short (under 2m) runs in an equipment rack.

Fibre Optic HDMI — Long Runs to Displays
For fixed runs over 5m to displays in other rooms, fibre optic HDMI (available up to 50m) is cleaner and more reliable than active copper HDMI. No signal degradation over distance. Not bi-directional — direction matters at installation.

Multi-Room Audio & Video FAQ
What is the difference between an HDMI splitter and an HDMI matrix?+−
An HDMI splitter takes one source and sends it to multiple displays — all showing the same content simultaneously. An HDMI matrix takes multiple sources and routes any of them to any display independently — so one room can watch Sky while another watches Blu-ray. For genuine multi-room video distribution, you need a matrix.
What ethernet cable category do I need?+−
Cat6 is the practical minimum for a new installation — it supports Gigabit ethernet over 100m runs. Cat6a (Augmented) improves crosstalk performance at high frequencies and future-proofs the installation for 10 Gigabit ethernet. For audio-specific applications, screened (STP/FTP) Cat6 or Cat6a is recommended to reduce the effect of electrical interference from dimmer switches, LED drivers and other sources.
Can I use WiFi instead of ethernet for multi-room streaming?+−
WiFi is practical for secondary zones but not ideal as the primary backbone. WiFi performance degrades with distance, physical barriers and interference from neighbouring networks. For the central network switch, NAS drives and primary streamers, ethernet connections deliver more reliable, lower-latency performance — which is especially important for whole-home audio synchronisation.
How far can I run HDMI without signal loss?+−
Passive HDMI cables start to degrade at around 3–5m for 4K HDR. Active copper HDMI (with built-in signal boosters) extend this to around 10–15m reliably. Fibre optic HDMI maintains perfect 4K signal up to 50m. For fixed in-wall runs, HDBaseT extenders over Cat6 are the standard approach — supporting 4K at up to 70m over a single ethernet cable.
Do I need a managed network switch?+−
For a simple music streaming setup, an unmanaged Gigabit switch is sufficient. If you are distributing 4K video, running home automation, or want to prioritise audio traffic, a managed switch with QoS (Quality of Service) and VLAN support is recommended. This allows audio/video traffic to be prioritised over general internet traffic, reducing dropouts.
What is HDBaseT and how does it differ from standard HDMI extenders?+−
HDBaseT is a standard for transmitting HDMI, control signals (RS232, IR), ethernet and power over a single Cat5e/6 cable. Unlike basic HDMI extenders, HDBaseT transmitters and receivers handle 4K HDR reliably, support HDCP 2.2, and can carry control signals alongside video — which simplifies whole-home installation.
