Do I need a headphone amplifier?+
It depends on your headphones. Most in-ear monitors (IEMs) and headphones under 80Ω are easy to drive from a smartphone or computer headphone output. Over-ear headphones above 150Ω — particularly open-back planar and dynamic designs — typically benefit from a dedicated amp for correct current delivery. If your headphones sound quiet even at high volume, or thin and congested, a headphone amp is likely the fix.
Can I upgrade the cable on my headphones?+
Only if your headphones have a detachable cable — which many higher-end models do. Audeze LCD series, Focal Elear and Clear, Sennheiser HD6 series, Beyerdynamic T1 and T5 all have standard detachable cables. The connector type varies — check your headphone model before ordering a replacement cable.
What does a DAP do that a phone cannot?+
A dedicated digital audio player (DAP) offers a higher-quality DAC and amplifier, support for hi-res audio formats (DSD, MQA, 24-bit/192kHz PCM), and — in flagship models like Astell & Kern — balanced 4.4mm or 2.5mm outputs. The listening experience is also dedicated and distraction-free. The improvement over a flagship smartphone with a quality IEM is significant but incremental; the improvement over a mid-range phone is usually dramatic.
What is the difference between 3.5mm, 4.4mm and XLR headphone connections?+
3.5mm single-ended is the universal standard — found on most DAPs, amps and computers. 4.4mm Pentaconn is the balanced portable standard, found on higher-end DAPs and some DAC/amps — a balanced connection reduces noise and crosstalk. 4-pin XLR balanced is the desktop balanced standard, found on dedicated headphone amplifiers. The improvement from balanced output is most audible on sensitive, low-noise equipment.
Is a portable DAC worth it for phone listening?+
A portable DAC (like the iFi GO bar or Chord Mojo 2) plugs into your phone's USB-C port and replaces its built-in audio entirely. The improvement is most noticeable on high-quality IEMs or sensitive over-ear headphones — where the smartphone DAC's noise floor becomes audible. For basic commuting with budget IEMs, the improvement is smaller.
What is the benefit of a linear power supply over a standard wall adapter?+
Standard switch-mode power supplies (wall adapters) generate high-frequency switching noise that can couple into sensitive DAC and amp circuitry. Linear power supplies (like the iFi iPower Elite or Sbooster BOTW) eliminate this noise source entirely. The improvement is most audible on DACs with external power inputs — particularly those from iFi, Chord and Melco — where customers consistently report a quieter noise floor and cleaner bass.
