Headphones are the one part of a system where fit and seal matter as much as specification. A pair that suits your head, your ears and the place you listen will beat a technically better pair that does not.
Impedance and sensitivity decide whether you need an amplifier. High impedance designs need more voltage than a phone or laptop can supply and will sound thin and quiet without one. Sensitive in-ear monitors have the opposite problem and can reveal hiss from a noisy output. Planar magnetic designs generally want more power than dynamic designs of similar impedance.
Open back headphones give a wider sound stage and leak sound in both directions, which rules them out on a train or in a shared room. Closed back designs isolate better at some cost in openness.
