From 1970s turntables to network audio
Melco has an unusual history for a network audio company. The name stands for Maki Engineering Laboratory Company, and in the 1970s it built high-end turntables. It then spent three decades as one of the largest storage manufacturers in Japan under the Buffalo name, before returning to audio in 2014 with a product that combined the two: a music library built to storage-industry standards but designed for a hi-fi system rather than an office.
The difference from an ordinary NAS is the network side. A standard NAS is designed to serve many devices at once over a busy network. A Melco library has a dedicated player port that is isolated from the rest of the network, so the streamer is not sharing a switch with everything else in the house. The internal power supply, the clocking and the mechanical isolation all follow audio practice rather than IT practice.
DELA is the same company. It is the brand name used in Japan, and products sometimes carry it here too.
The S-series switches apply similar thinking to network infrastructure, and the E-series adds expansion storage to an existing library.
