Bi-Wire Speaker Cables

For speakers with two pairs of binding posts. Bi-wire cables run separate conductors to the bass and treble sections from one amplifier output, and bi-amp sets serve two amplifier channels per speaker.

"Bi-wire, bi-amp, or neither? Bi-wiring splits the cable run into separate conductors for the low frequency and high frequency binding posts on your speakers, while still connecting to one pair of amplifier terminals. It only applies if your speakers have four binding posts and the link plates have been removed. Bi-amping is a different job. It uses two amplifier channels per speaker, one for bass and one for treble, so it needs two full cable runs and amplification with the outputs to support it. Check your amplifier manual before assuming this is possible. Whether bi-wiring improves things depends on the speaker. Some designs respond clearly, others show very little difference and are better served by putting the same money into a higher grade single-wire cable. We will say so if that is the case for your speakers. Every cable on this page is cut to length free of charge, comes with optional free burn-in, and carries the 60-day money-back guarantee."

Start by considering your amplifier and speakers. For short runs or compact systems, basic oxygen-free copper cables may suffice. But if you're after tighter bass, better detail or a wider soundstage, an upgrade to a higher-quality cable, like those from Chord Company, AudioQuest or Atlas, can make a noticeable difference. For personalised recommendations, speak to our consultants here.

Yes. Bi-wire cables separate the signal paths for high and low frequencies, which can improve control and reduce interference in compatible speakers. Single-wire cables are suitable for most systems, but bi-wire setups can offer sonic gains if your speakers and amp support them. Alternatively, you can use single-wire cables with matching jumper cables on bi-wirable speakers.

Yes, cable length can influence performance. Longer runs can introduce resistance and signal loss, especially with thinner cables. Where possible, try to keep left and right channel lengths similar, and choose an appropriate gauge for the distance.

In short, yes, although, this depends on the quality of the cable and your speakers/amplifier. High quality speaker cables tend to be manufactured with 4 key areas, their conductor, dielectric, shielding and geometry. Each of these areas can optimise signal retention from your amplifier to your speakers. Cheaper speaker cables can use lower quality conductors (tin-plated copper or even steel-clad copper), with basic dielectrics (PVC), no shielding and minimal strands with no geometry. More expensive speaker cables start to introduce higher quality conductors (Oxygen-free Copper, Ohno Continuous Cast Copper, Silver-plated Copper or even Pure Silver), better dielectrics (XLPE, PTFE, Teflon etc.), different amounts of shielding (foil, ofc-braid, carbon etc) and various geometries (solid-core, different twists, higher gauges etc.). There are diminishing returns to consider between your speaker cable and your system, as well as the potential of bottle-necks in your system if you use a lower quality cable. All of these factors help to maintain signal integrity, reduce loss, and ensure that your amplifier and speaker are performing as intended.
