"Routing and extracting HDMI signals
HDMI distribution hardware answers one of three questions: how do I send one source to several displays, how do I connect several sources to one display, or how do I get audio out of an HDMI signal and into an amplifier that has no HDMI input.
A splitter sends one input to multiple outputs. A switch does the opposite, selecting between several sources for one display. A matrix does both at once, and is what you need when several sources and several displays all have to reach each other independently. ARC and eARC extractors pull audio out of the HDMI path for a stereo amplifier or DAC.
EDID handling is where most distribution installations go wrong. When several displays with different capabilities sit on one output, the source often defaults to the lowest common specification, so a 4K television can end up receiving 1080p.
