Wiring a turntable properly
Turntable cable carries the smallest signal in any hi-fi system, often a fraction of a millivolt from a moving coil cartridge, and it is the one connection where cable choice reliably changes what you hear. Capacitance, shielding and earthing all matter here.
The connector arrangement depends on the deck. Many turntables use a five pin DIN at the tonearm, so you need DIN to RCA into a standard phono stage, or DIN to DIN where the phono stage takes one. Some decks have a captive lead that can be replaced entirely, others have a fixed cable that cannot. Check what leaves your tonearm before ordering.
Capacitance is the specification to watch with moving magnet cartridges, which are loaded by the total capacitance of cable and phono stage together. Too much and the treble rolls off, too little and it can sound bright. Moving coil cartridges are far less sensitive to capacitance but more sensitive to noise, which makes shielding and a solid earth connection the priorities.
