What a USB audio cable actually does
A USB audio cable carries both the data and, on most cables, five volts of bus power from the computer. That power line is the main route by which computer noise reaches a DAC, which is why audio specific USB cables treat the power and signal conductors differently from a printer lead.
Get the connector combination right first. Most desktop DACs take USB-B, so a computer connection needs USB-A to B or USB-C to B depending on the machine. Portable DACs and phones typically need USB-C to C or an OTG arrangement. Check what the DAC takes and what your source has before ordering.
Keep the run short. USB audio is specified to five metres and shorter is better, so where distance is a problem the answer is usually to move the DAC rather than to buy a longer cable. Some DACs are self powered and ignore bus power entirely, in which case a cable with a separated or disconnected power line can lower the noise floor.
