Finishing an installed cable run
A wall plate terminates a cable run inside the wall and gives you a proper connector on the outside. It protects the cable, keeps the connection serviceable, and means equipment can be moved without pulling on cable buried in plasterwork.
Every plate adds two connections to the signal path, so use good quality terminals and make them off properly. Speaker plates should use binding posts rather than spring clips, and the terminals need to accept the cable gauge you are running. Modular plates let you mix connector types on one plate, which suits an AV wall where HDMI, speaker and network cable all arrive at the same point.
Plan plate positions around the equipment layout rather than the room layout. Allow enough slack behind the plate to pull it forward for servicing, and use a back box deep enough for the connectors and the bend radius of the cable, which is a common problem with HDMI. If you are specifying plates for an installation, tell us what is being terminated at each position.
