Why Atacama stands are designed to be filled
A speaker stand has one job: to stop the cabinet moving and to stop the floor sending energy back into it. Doing that well is mostly a question of mass and damping, and mass is expensive to ship. Atacama's answer, from the beginning, has been to build stands that arrive light and are filled by the customer.
That is not a cost-saving measure so much as a performance one. Atacama's Atabites filling material lets you set the mass to suit the speaker sitting on top, and a partially filled stand behaves differently from a fully filled one. A small standmount and a large one want different things, and a fixed-weight stand can only be right for one of them.
The company has been in Leicestershire since 1993 and manufactures in the UK, which shows in the finish quality and in how easily replacement parts and spikes can still be had for older models.
Alongside stands, Atacama make equipment racks, isolation platforms and turntable supports. The rack ranges share the same design thinking: modular, level by level, so a system can be added to rather than replaced.
