Choosing speaker cable for your system

Speaker cable carries the full amplified signal, so conductor quality, geometry and termination all affect what reaches the drivers. The differences are usually easiest to hear in bass control and stereo imaging, and they become clearer as the rest of the system improves.

Three decisions cover most purchases. Length should be equal for both runs even if the speakers sit at different distances from the amplifier. Configuration means single-wire, bi-wire or bi-amp, which depends on whether your speakers have one pair of binding posts or two. Termination means banana plugs, spades or bare wire, and the right answer is whatever your amplifier and speakers actually accept.

Most cables can be made to your exact length, either cut and terminated here or built to order by the manufacturer. You pay for the cable you need and nothing on top for making it up, though a small number are only available in fixed lengths and terminations. Burn-in on a Nordost Vidar is a free optional extra in 24 hour increments up to 96 hours. If you are not sure which cable suits your system, call or email us and we will tell you what we think.

Start by considering your amplifier and speakers. For short runs or compact systems, basic oxygen-free copper cables may suffice. But if you're after tighter bass, better detail or a wider soundstage, an upgrade to a higher-quality cable, like those from Chord Company, AudioQuest or Atlas, can make a noticeable difference. For personalised recommendations, speak to our consultants here.

Yes. Bi-wire cables separate the signal paths for high and low frequencies, which can improve control and reduce interference in compatible speakers. Single-wire cables are suitable for most systems, but bi-wire setups can offer sonic gains if your speakers and amp support them. Alternatively, you can use single-wire cables with matching jumper cables on bi-wirable speakers.

Higher-end cables often use better conductors, insulation materials, and terminations, which can reduce signal loss and interference. Whether it's worth the investment depends on your system's resolution and your listening environment. Our team can help you choose based on your priorities.

Yes, cable length can influence performance. Longer runs can introduce resistance and signal loss, especially with thinner cables. Where possible, try to keep left and right channel lengths similar, and choose an appropriate gauge for the distance.

Jumper cables replace the metal links between binding posts on bi-wireable speakers. Stock jumpers can limit performance, while high-quality alternatives preserve signal integrity and improve coherence across frequencies. When replacing your manufacturer supplied links, we recommend to use jumper cables of equal or better quality than your speaker cable.

All cables matter, and your system will require good quality cables for all of it's connections, however, if you were looking for the cable which will make the biggest difference, then we would recommend looking at the power cables from your wall socket, to your distribution block and/or amplifier. More often than not, we hear from customers, manufacturers, and our own tests that higher quality power cables can have a significant impact of the quality of your system.

This entirely depends on your current system and your expectations. You could have a decent pair of speakers which are not matched correctly with your amplifier, or vice versa. Similarly, you may want a new source of media to listen to. There are also options to upgrade other aspects of your system, such as the power, isolation or cabling to get the most out of your system before upgrading the traditional components. The best way to find out your own upgrade path is to contact our consultants and we would be happy to help you.

In short, yes, although, this depends on the quality of the cable and your speakers/amplifier. High quality speaker cables tend to be manufactured with 4 key areas, their conductor, dielectric, shielding and geometry. Each of these areas can optimise signal retention from your amplifier to your speakers. Cheaper speaker cables can use lower quality conductors (tin-plated copper or even steel-clad copper), with basic dielectrics (PVC), no shielding and minimal strands with no geometry. More expensive speaker cables start to introduce higher quality conductors (Oxygen-free Copper, Ohno Continuous Cast Copper, Silver-plated Copper or even Pure Silver), better dielectrics (XLPE, PTFE, Teflon etc.), different amounts of shielding (foil, ofc-braid, carbon etc) and various geometries (solid-core, different twists, higher gauges etc.). There are diminishing returns to consider between your speaker cable and your system, as well as the potential of bottle-necks in your system if you use a lower quality cable. All of these factors help to maintain signal integrity, reduce loss, and ensure that your amplifier and speaker are performing as intended.
