Support that earns its place
A rack and a pair of stands are structural components, not furniture. What your equipment sits on decides how much vibration reaches it and, in the case of speaker stands, whether the drivers are firing at the height your ears are actually at.
Speaker stands do two jobs. They set the tweeter close to seated ear height, and they give the cabinet a rigid, heavy platform so energy goes into the air rather than into the stand. Mass loading with sand or shot lowers the resonant frequency and improves most designs. Measure your seated ear height before choosing a stand height rather than guessing.
For racks, rigidity and level shelves matter more than looks, though there is no reason to accept something ugly. Check shelf dimensions against your deepest component, allow room behind for cable runs and plugs, and check the load rating for a heavy power amplifier. Wall brackets can be the best answer in a small room, provided the wall is solid rather than stud. Tell us the components and the room and we will suggest something that fits both.
