American cable maker founded in 1991, built on insulation and extrusion techniques originally developed for aerospace use. The flat cable geometry and micro mono-filament construction are Nordost's own and remain unusual in the industry.

The aerospace origins of Nordost's flat cable
Nordost began with a material problem rather than a musical one. The founders came from a background in extruding very thin, very consistent insulation for aerospace applications, and the first Nordost cables were an attempt to find out what that manufacturing capability could do for audio.
The result looks unlike anything else. Nordost cables are flat, with conductors held in a plane and spaced precisely, and that is not a styling decision. Insulation stores and releases energy, and the less of it touching a conductor, the less of that happens. Flat geometry lets Nordost use a thin, even layer of FEP across a wide surface rather than a thick jacket wrapped around a bundle.
On the higher ranges this goes further. Micro mono-filament construction wraps a fine filament helically around the conductor, holding the FEP away so most of what surrounds the signal is air. Air is the best dielectric available and the hardest to build a cable around.
Nordost also make the QRT power and grounding products and the Sort System isolation range, both developed in-house rather than sourced.

Nordost group their cables into three families rather than naming each level individually, which catches people out. Leif covers White Lightning, Blue Heaven, Red Dawn and Purple Flare. Norse 2 covers Heimdall 2, Frey 2 and Tyr 2. Reference covers Valhalla 2 and Odin 2. So a customer asking for Heimdall is asking for a Norse 2 cable, and the step from Leif to Norse 2 is where micro mono-filament arrives.
