Focal Clear MG Open-Backed Headphones
After four years of research and development, the engineers at Focal have designed a Magnesium dome for the Clear Mg speaker drivers. This new alloy, combined with an ‘M’-shaped dome, contributes to even more lightness, rigidity and damping, the three success factors for a speaker driver. The sound reproduction is fine, precise and impactful, for a strikingly realist sound. Combined with an amplifier/DAC, Clear Mg headphones display impressive performance. Thanks to an impedance of 55 Ohms, they can also be used without compromise with a portable audio player. The St. Étienne brand first positioned itself on the global market of Hi-Fi headphones in 2016. This unique savoir-faire, combined with French manufacturing mastered in its own workshops, has led Focal to be recognised by the French state as a Living Heritage Company (Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant).
In developing its products, Focal places design and materials at the forefront in its mission to create the ultimate sound and listening comfort. The solid aluminium yoke has been developed to perfectly mould to the face, the headband covered in genuine leather and microfibre offers a constant curve, no matter which way the head turns, and the perforated microfibre earpads result in enhanced opening and comfort. The outside of the earpads boasts a sophisticated honeycomb pattern: an elegance contributed to by the brand new Chestnut and Mixed-Metals finish which blend classic and modern looks. For a perfect package, the carrying case has been woven in colours to match the headphones.

Speakers are designed and made in France
Focal says its speakers are designed, developed and made in France, mainly in Saint-Etienne. Cabinets come from a facility in Bourbon-Lancy. The Saint-Etienne site covers research and production of drivers, speakers and headphones, so most of the work happens within one country.
Driver materials are a Focal speciality
Focal has developed a range of cone and dome materials, including Polykevlar, Polyglass, W cones, flax cones and a beryllium tweeter. Each is a different answer to the same problem of a cone that is light and rigid. Check the product page for the materials used in each model.
Headphones come in three categories
The headphone range is divided into hi-fi, wireless and professional models. The hi-fi models are for listening at home, the wireless models are for use out and about, and the professional models are for monitoring work. Choose by where you will wear them.
Why we stock Focal
We already had a relationship with Focal before we took the headphones on, which made the decision straightforward. They are unusual among headphone brands in making their own drivers, and the M-shaped dome runs from the accessible models to the reference ones. Few other brands we carry can put that much of their own engineering into a headphone.

As with all headphones, most of the soundstage is between your ears, but the Clear Focal MG has a wider soundstage than other headphones I've experienced. I've enjoyed relistening to my music collection as this is a very different experience than listening through my NAP 250 DR power amp and PMC Twenty.26 speakers. These make music sound as if it's live in your lounge, whereas good recordings through these headphones sound as if the singer has superimposed themselves to your body with the sound coming from your own head. Binaural audio dramas played through headphones of this quality are disturbing.
These are open-backed headphones, which eliminates reverberation giving superior sound quality and a wider soundstage. But others can hear what you are listening to, and you can hear the sounds around you. So, they are designed for personal listening at home in a quiet environment. For this purpose, they are highly recommended.
