The Gold Note DS-5.2 is a compact fully balanced streaming DAC from the Series 5.2, built around the same design philosophy that shaped the DS-10 EVO. It is not a simplified product but a more accessible and space-efficient interpretation of the same approach: a digital source that prioritises musical truth over artificial enhancement, developed through Gold Note's deep familiarity with reference recordings and how they should actually sound. The AKM AK4493 DAC delivers a signal to noise ratio of 125dB and total harmonic distortion of 0.001% max, with frequency response accurate to within 0.1dB across the full audio band.
As a streaming platform the DS-5.2 is comprehensively equipped, supporting Roon Ready, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, Spotify Lossless HD, AirPlay 2, MQA, and Deezer, with network playback supporting PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256. Digital inputs cover coaxial, optical, HDMI eARC for direct TV integration, USB-A, USB-C, and Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX HD, and a dedicated digital output allows the DS-5.2 to function as a pure streamer feeding an external DAC. Both XLR balanced and RCA unbalanced analogue outputs are provided alongside an integrated preamplifier stage and a 6.35mm headphone output, giving the unit genuine flexibility across a wide range of system configurations. A colour touchscreen display with cover art provides control at the unit itself, and the GN Control app handles remote operation from iOS and Android.
The DS-5.2 is designed and assembled in Italy, finished in black anodised aluminium, and is fully compatible with the optional PSX-5.2 external power supply for those who wish to develop the system progressively over time without replacing the unit itself.
Gold Note presents DS-5.2, the new streamer DAC from the Series 5.2: a compact, fully balanced and deeply versatile digital source designed to unite the world of traditional high-fidelity with the needs of contemporary listening.
DS-5.2 originates from the same philosophy that gave birth to DS-10 EVO, one of Gold Note’s most appreciated digital platforms of recent years. It does not represent a simplified version, but a more compact, accessible and immediate reinterpretation of the same concept: bringing hi-end performance, control and musical quality into a machine capable of integrating naturally into modern systems and environments.
At the core of the project lies a precise idea: a digital source should not simply reproduce a music file correctly, but should be capable of extracting the truth of the recording, respecting its identity, intention and original coherence.
DS-5.2 was created exactly for this purpose.
Despite its compact format, DS-5.2 maintains a fully balanced design developed according to Gold Note principles of control, naturalness and sonic coherence.
Every circuit choice has been developed to minimise noise, instability and interference while preserving dynamic naturalness, spatial depth and musical credibility.
As always at Gold Note, the project was not created to emphasise detail or impress the listener, but to build a reproduction that remains stable, intelligible and credible over time.
DS-5.2 perfectly represents the philosophy of the new Series 5.2: making the Gold Note experience more accessible without depriving it of its design identity.
Compact, elegant and versatile, DS-5.2 has been developed to offer a true entry point into the Gold Note hi-end world, while maintaining a build quality, sonic maturity and functional completeness normally belonging to higher categories.
It is not a “simplified” product, but an intelligent democratisation of an evolved hi-end approach.
DS-5.2 was also created as an integral part of a modular and scalable ecosystem.
Compatibility with the dedicated PSX-5.2 external power supply allows the system to evolve progressively over time, increasing control, stability, naturalness and dynamic capability without forcing the user to completely replace the product.
This approach reflects one of the central ideas of the Gold Note philosophy:
not to create isolated products that are quickly surpassed, but coherent architectures capable of growing together with the user.
With a progressive and contained investment, the system can gradually approach the performance of higher Gold Note architectures, following a path of real, perceptible and sustainable evolution over time.
A philosophy that would later find its highest expression in the TRIO concept of the Series 1000.
Like all Gold Note products, DS-5.2 is designed, assembled and tested internally in Italy.
For Gold Note, Made in Italy is not simply a geographical origin, but a design method that combines manufacturing culture, musical research, production control and engineering precision within a coherent vision.
Form, materials, interface and construction are not separate from sound quality.
They are part of it.
DS-5.2 demonstrates that a modern digital source can be compact, accessible, elegant and incredibly versatile without renouncing the design depth of true high fidelity.
It was not created to impress with artificial effects.
It was not created to reinterpret music.
It was created to allow the recording to emerge in its most authentic form.
Because musical truth does not depend on the quantity of technology used, but on how it is used, designed and placed at the service of music.
The story of Gold Note is one of dedication and talent. And, like all business success stories, it is a plural experience: the paths of a vast community of people intertwine in the magnificent headquarters nestled in the Florentine hills. Every day, these people put their skills and abilities at the service of the same goal, the Italian sound.
But in the beginning was Maurizio Aterini. It’s the end of the Seventies of the last century; Maurizio is only eight years old: one night his father comes home with a stereo system that will change his entire life. From that moment, his passion for audio reproduction systems is ignited. At the beginning it is little more than an interest he shares with many of his peers, something that fascinates and intrigues him; but as time goes on, this pull grows and in the Eighties Maurizio, now a young man, starts studying engineering at the university.
1992 is a pivotal year: Maurizio decides to challenge himself and he founds a technical design studio for third parties. Those are the years when he designs a specific tonearm that, up to these days, is still mounted on the Gold Note turntables with very few changes: the B-5, a model with an accurate distribution of the weights along its longitudinal axis, which guarantees a perfectly balanced configuration.
Commission after commission, the company achieves a good reputation among the international community, eventually asserting itself as an important boutique of sound engineering. The industrial model proves to be able to offer to the market creativity, engineering and production startup, thus guaranteeing the utmost flexibility at the service of the companies’ needs. The growth of the working group runs parallel to the company development: in the early 2000s, technicians and designers are joined by other figures, like Elena Basciano, Maurizio’s wife, who joins the company as head of human resources, putting to good use the experience she gained as head of many large international corporations. In 2007 Alessio Oronti becomes an associate and enters the executive ranks of the company.
In the meantime, a new type of interlocutors looms on the horizon: no longer just constructors with very specific catalogue requirements, but also distributors without well-established brands, looking for a new one. It’s at this moment that Maurizio, Elena and Alessio realize that it is time to leave the third-party industry. In 2012 Gold Note is founded. It’s the beginning of a new story: many of those who used to be their clients are now competitors; but the market looks promising: from the very start Family sound and design are recognised as the distinctive traits of the brand. Today, more than ten years after that moment, the company controls all the major markets, and it has a well-established reputation both among the experts and the audio enthusiasts as a guarantee of audio excellence. In such a competitive and crowded space as the world of audiophilia, Gold Note is a synonym of reliability, sonic quality, constant research for innovation and respect for the tradition of the Italian sound.
