Modular Hungarian electronics
Heed have built small, well-made electronics in Budapest since 1993. The name comes from híd, Hungarian for bridge, and the circuits trace back to Richard Hay's Ion Systems and Nytech designs, which accounts for a good deal of the house sound.
The range is built around adding rather than replacing. An Obelisk integrated amplifier takes DAC or phono modules internally and an outboard power supply later. The Thesis preamplifier's digital section is modular for the same reason. Elixir sits below both as the entry point.
That suits someone building a system over years rather than in one purchase, who would rather add a box than sell one.
The reputation is for a lively, rhythmically direct presentation rather than a smooth one, which pairs well with speakers that need pushing along. The Questar and Quasar phono stages have a particular following among Rega owners.
