Audeze LCD-5s Open-Back Planar Magnetic Headphones
The Audeze LCD-5s represent the next evolution of flagship planar magnetic headphone design, blending extreme resolution with a sense of physical presence that goes beyond traditional reference tuning. Designed for listeners who demand absolute accuracy without sacrificing musical engagement, the LCD-5s delivers a sound that is spacious, controlled, and deeply immersive, making it equally at home in mastering studios and high-end home systems.
At the heart of the LCD-5s is Audeze’s SLAM™ acoustic architecture, which optimises airflow behind the diaphragm to enhance bass authority and spatial realism. This works in tandem with a 90mm Nano-Scale Parallel Uniforce™ diaphragm, engineered to maintain uniform force across its surface for exceptionally low distortion and a smooth, natural frequency response. The result is a presentation with a transparent midrange, extended treble, and a low end that feels both articulate and physical rather than exaggerated.
Comfort and build quality match the technical ambition. A lightweight magnesium and carbon fibre chassis keeps overall weight low for a flagship planar design, while sculpted earpads improve pressure distribution and reduce internal reflections during long listening sessions. Finished with premium materials and supplied with a high-purity OCC copper cable and aluminium travel case, the LCD-5s stands as a statement headphone for those seeking a true reference experience with emotional impact.
Here is what Audeze say about the LCD-5s
The Audeze LCD-5s evolves the flagship planar magnetic experience by blending surgical transparency with visceral impact. Featuring the new SLAM™ (Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator) technology, it optimizes airflow to deliver a powerful low-frequency response and a more holographic soundstage. This system transforms the listening experience from purely analytical to deeply immersive, providing a lifelike sense of scale and physical presence.
Technically, the LCD-5s utilizes a 90mm Nano-Scale Parallel Uniforce™ diaphragm and a 30-ohm impedance for refined performance across high-end amplifiers. This updated driver platform is specifically tuned for a natural midrange and flawless high-resolution reproduction. With a frequency response of 5Hz–50kHz and distortion under 0.1%, it serves as a reliable mastering-grade tool for professionals and critical listeners alike.
The 475g chassis is crafted from magnesium and carbon fiber, accented by tortoiseshell acetate and copper hardware. Newly sculpted earpads enhance ergonomics by improving pressure distribution and minimizing internal reflections, ensuring comfort during long sessions. Hand-assembled in California, the LCD-5s comes complete with a high-purity OCC copper cable and an aluminium travel case, representing the pinnacle of high-fidelity luxury.

SLAM™ Acoustic Modulation
The defining feature of the LCD-5s is the Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator (SLAM™). This technology manages internal air pressure to allow the diaphragm to move with greater physical authority. By optimizing airflow, SLAM™ delivers a tactile bass response and a holographic soundstage, moving beyond transparency to create a truly lifelike, immersive sonic environment.
Nano-Scale Diaphragm Precision
At the core of the LCD-5s is the 90mm Nano-Scale Parallel Uniforce™ diaphragm. This ultra-thin material responds instantaneously to the most delicate musical signals. By varying voice coil trace widths, Audeze ensures uniform current density across the driver surface, resulting in a flat frequency response free from the distortion common in traditional designs.
Professional-Grade Tuning
The LCD-5s is meticulously tuned for a natural midrange and effortless high-frequency extension. With an impedance of 30 ohms, it provides a stable load for a wide range of high-end amplifiers. This refined tuning ensures the headphones act as a reliable reference tool, allowing professionals to make critical mastering decisions with absolute confidence.
Lightweight Magnesium Chassis
Audeze combines structural rigidity with weight efficiency by utilizing a magnesium and carbon fiber frame. This premium material choice provides a resonance-free foundation for the drivers while keeping the weight at 475g. The result is a robust, professional build that stands up to the rigors of studio use without the fatigue associated with heavier planar models.
Contoured Ergonomic Comfort
To support extended listening, the LCD-5s features newly sculpted, internally sloped earpads. These pads are designed to optimize fit and pressure distribution across various head shapes. Beyond comfort, the acoustic geometry minimizes internal reflections and resonances, ensuring the signal remains pure and the stereo imaging stays pinpoint accurate.
Flagship Craftsmanship
Every LCD-5s is hand-assembled in California using luxury materials, including deep-gloss tortoiseshell acetate and copper hardware. The package includes a high-purity OCC copper cable and a heavy-duty aluminium travel case. This dedication to craftsmanship ensures the LCD-5s is not just advanced technology, but a lasting investment in high-fidelity excellence.

Planar and electrostatic drivers are made in-house
Audeze says its planar magnetic and electrostatic drivers are built in its own factory in Orange County, California. A planar driver moves a thin, flat diaphragm across its whole surface, rather than a cone from a single point. Check the product page for the driver type in the model you want.
Higher-end models are hand assembled in America
The company says its models priced above $399 are hand assembled and tested in the United States. If you are comparing models, each product page shows the specification and price, so you can see where a headphone sits in the range before you decide.
The range is split by use
LCD and CRBN are the hi-fi lines, MM pro is aimed at studio monitoring, and MAXWELL and LCD-GX are built for gaming. Audeze states that it holds eleven American patents. Specifications and amplifier requirements differ by model, so check the product page before you pair a model with your source.
