AudioQuest Coffee USB Type A to Type B Data Cable

In 1982 Sony gave us "Perfect sound forever," along with the attitude that, "it's just digital, so all CD players sound the same." That was disproved and qualitative differences between players became accepted truth. Next came separate transport and DAC combos, which brought with it the attitude that "all S/PDIF digital audio cables sound the same..." until that too became disproved. Now the frontier has moved once again. Is digital audio really just ones and zeros? We don't believe so, and once you've had a chance to listen to Coffee USB, you won't think so either...

Features :

  • Solid 10% Silver Conductors
  • Solid High-Density Polyethylene Insulation
  • Carbon-Based 3-Layer Noise Dissipation System
  • Dielectric-Bias System (DBS, US Pat #s 7,126,055 & 7,872,195 B1)
  • Silver-Plated Terminations
  • Universal Serial Bus Device Class Definition for Audio Devices

Solid 10% Silver Conductors :

Solid conductors eliminate strand-interaction distortion and reduce jitter. Solid silver-plated conductors are excellent for very high-frequency applications, like USB audio. These signals, being such a high frequency, travel almost exclusively on the surface of the conductor. As the surface is made of high-purity silver, the performance is very close to that of a solid silver cable, but priced much closer to solid copper cable. This is an incredibly cost effective way of manufacturing very high-quality USB cables.

Solid High-Density Polyethylene Insulation :

Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then later released as distortion. Solid High-Density Polyethylene Insulation ensures critical signal-pair geometry while minimizing insulation-induced phase distortion.

Carbon-Based 3-Layer Noise Dissipation System :

100% shield coverage is easy. Preventing captured RF Interference from modulating the equipment’s ground reference requires AQ’s Noise-Dissipation System. Metal and Carbon-Loaded synthetics prevent most RFI from reaching the equipment’s ground plane.

Dielectric-Bias System (DBS, US Pat #s 7,126,055 & 7,872,195 B1) :

All insulation slows down the signal on the conductor inside. When insulation is unbiased, it slows down parts of the signal differently, a big problem for very time-sensitive multi-octave audio. AudioQuest’s DBS creates a strong, stable electrostatic field which saturates and polarizes (organizes) the molecules of the insulation. This minimizes both energy storage in the insulation and the multiple nonlinear time-delays that occur. Sound appears from a surprisingly black background with unexpected detail and dynamic contrast. The DBS battery packs will last for years. A test button and LED allow for the occasional battery check.

Silver-Plated Terminations :

Precision direct-silver plated pins are carefully attached with the very best solder. Through choice of flux and metallurgy, AQ solder has been optimized to make a low-distortion connection. The difference you hear between solders is a result of connection quality. AQ Solder does not have a high silver content because the more silver there is in solder, the more difficult it is to make a good connection.

Universal Serial Bus Device Class Definition for Audio Devices :

USB (Universal Serial BUS) was established by a stalwart group of companies such as Intel, Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft (just to name a few) in order to give the personal computing world a truly universal standard and means to connect devices such as hard drives, printers, cameras, and, more importantly to us, audio components. Included in the original description are protocols for the pristine transfer of audio over USB. Great care and sensitivity went into this. Consequently, a computer connected to a USB-enabled digital-to-analog converter can outperform the best compact disc players available today. AudioQuest is committed to contributing products that honor USB's ability to deliver state-of-the-art performance on this new and wonderful frontier.

Contact Enhancer Option

To ensure the best possible connection between your system, Future Shop recommends the DeoxIT Gold G-Series contact enhancer.

DeoxIT Gold is carefully applied to the plug contacts of your cable and is a unique conditioning solution designed to improve conductivity and provide long-lasting protection on gold, base metals and other precious metal contacts and connections. DeoxIT Gold penetrates plated surfaces, molecularly bonding to the base metals to seal and protect both surfaces.

The benefits of applying DeoxIT gold are:

  • Improved Conductivity
  • Maintained optimum signal quality
  • Reduced wear & abrasion
  • Prevents fretting/dendrite corrosion
  • Forms a protective anti-tarnishing coating
  • Stabilises connections between similar and dissimilar metals
  • Reduces arcing, RFI and intermittent connections

Please select this option from the above ‘Contact Enhancer’ drop-down menu and our engineers will apply the contact solution to your cable connectors prior to shipping.

About AudioQuest

AudioQuest has been the largest cable supplier to the high-end specialist market for many years. AudioQuest is sold in several hundred outlets in the US and in over sixty countries. Bill Lowe (Founder) is especially pleased that this success has been possible despite his insistence that the foundation of the company, and the foundation of AudioQuest marketing, must be the performance of the product. In the audio world, many professionals have learned that it is not always convenient to listen to the products they sell … they might learn something they don’t want to know! Bill has always understood the challenge of basing the existence of AudioQuest on the performance of the product. However, to Bill, this is the only reasonable way to do business and the only acceptable way to combine his passion for music (and all things high performance), with his need to make a living.

About AudioQuest

Californian cable maker covering analogue, digital, speaker and power cables, with patented conductor and dielectric designs.

AudioQuest is based in Irvine, California, and makes cables for nearly every connection in a system: analogue interconnects, USB, HDMI and Ethernet, speaker cables and AC power cables. Its designs come back to four ideas: solid conductors, directionality, noise dissipation and the quality of the metal.

Read more about AudioQuest Show less

Conductor and metal choices come first

Solid conductors and metal quality are two of the ideas AudioQuest returns to across its range. HyperLitz, a conductor construction patented in 1988, is another. Directionality, the principle that a cable is built to carry signal in one direction, is the fourth.

Noise is treated as a separate design problem

AudioQuest lists its noise-dissipation technologies as ZERO-Tech, RF/ND-Tech and the Dielectric-Bias System, which was patented in 2004. They are applied alongside the conductor work rather than in place of it, and which ones a cable carries depends on the model and its price.

One brand across the whole system

AudioQuest also makes AC power cables, Niagara and PowerQuest power conditioners and DragonFly DACs alongside its analogue, digital and speaker cables. If you are building or upgrading a system, that means every cable in the chain, and the power feeding it, can come from one design approach.

Why we stock AudioQuest

We took AudioQuest on for HDMI. When the 1.4 spec arrived in 2009 they were the first supplier who could actually get the cables to us, at a point when almost nobody could. The power cables turned out to be just as good, and they are now a bigger part of what we sell than the HDMI ever was.

Improved detail but not flexible 5 October 2023
It is an improvement in detail compared to the AudioQuest Cinnamon cable but stiff, so it may be considered user-unfriendly.

Smooth coffee 29 August 2022
After trying cables from 3 different manufacturers, I am delighted to settle on the AudioQuest Coffee.

I would recommend anyone with a bright-sounding system to give this a shot. The cable is mainly constructed from copper, which seems to smooth out any apparent over-emphasis in the upper mids and treble regions. The 10% silver component means you still retain a lot of detail. This combination sounded clearly the best to my ears and was worth the price.

Many thanks to Hezron at Futureshop for being patient & helpful during my search!

A must have cable! 8 February 2021
After spending thousands on the rest of my system, spending a few hundred is probably the best investment for the money. Compared to a stick USB cable, I found an improvement to the mid detail and presence. The room sounded bigger, the echoes lasted longer and felt that openness in the soundstage.

Definitely a good cable.

Excellent Cable 22 November 2018

I received the cable yesterday, and gave it a listen last night. Firstly I listened to 4 or 5 tracks through the Audioquest Forest USB cable so I could make a comparison. Initial listening to the Coffee it was very clear how much detail came through. I wasn’t expecting such a difference and anyone who says USB cables make no difference are quite honestly talking out of their …..

There was a very noticeable difference from the off.The treble seemed to sparkle and seemed too bright taking over everything Unfortunately the music seemed to lose warmth. The overall sound came over a bit harsh. Bass seemed less focused, and my initial thought was disappointment. I much preferred the sound of the Forest.

However; after about 10 minutes or so the music started to sound much warmer and the bass that was initially lacking came through. After half an hour or so everything sounded incredible. The obsolete bass became nice and warm and the balance of all aspects of the music took on new life. I know the importance of running in cables and also this is a 3m cable so it wasn’t a surprise to me that things improved dramatically after a short time of listening. There is absolutely no question in my mind that all aspects of the music have improved using the Coffee. Everything became 3 dimensional. The soundstage became more open like I was listening in a room twice the size. If I hadn’t heard this with my own ears I would have not believed such a difference was possible. Voices have more clarity, depth and realism, bass it taught and punchy and the treble sparkles without taking over. Needless to say Adam, this cable will not be making it’s way back to you for a refund..lol Thank you so much for recommending it. I couldn’t be happier with the improvement.

I will now laugh smugly to myself when I read or here people say that the quality of USB leads make no difference to the music at all. It’s plainly obvious they have not even listened to them, done their own tests or it could simply be that they are tone deaf!

Best regards.Colin.

The AudioQuest Coffee USB made a big improvement. 2 March 2018
I had been using a Wireworld Ultraviolet USB cable to connect my Mac Mini to my Wadia 322 DAC, streaming Qobuz, but felt the quality of the sound could be improved with a better cable.I looked into various other cables and decided to bight the bullet and get a decent USB cable because I felt the rest of my system is of a reasonable high quality and that a cheaper cable would not work out.

So placed my order with Futurshop but fairly soon I got an email to say the short length cable I wanted was out of stock and was not expected in for some time, so nice Futureshop offered me the longer cable at no extra charge. A day later the cable arrived, it was quickly installed and although Futurshop recommended running in the cable for at least 100 hours there was an immediate improvement to the system, I expect it to be even better after the 100 hours of use. The sound stage, bass, treble, clarity all improved, its like have a new better quality system, I'm very happy with the Coffee, I do like my Coffee.
