AudioQuest DragonFly Copper USB DAC

The AudioQuest DragonFly Copper is a portable USB DAC, preamplifier, and headphone amplifier that bypasses the audio circuitry in laptops, computers, and smartphones, replacing it with something considerably more capable. At its core is a 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC chip, carefully optimised by DragonFly designer Gordon Rankin to reduce distortion to a level meaningfully below that of previous models in the range. The result is cleaner, more natural audio delivered to headphones, powered speakers, or a full audio system, whether the source file is a compressed MP3 or a high-resolution recording.

Compared to earlier DragonFly models, Copper delivers twice the output power while drawing approximately 25% less current, making it the most powerful and efficient DAC AudioQuest has produced in the range. The copper-plated case is not simply a finish choice; it draws directly from the RF-draining barrel design used in AudioQuest's Mythical Creatures interconnect cables, actively aiding the drainage of RF noise away from the circuitry. Volume is controlled through the connected device, and the DragonFly emblem changes colour to indicate both playback status and the sampling rate of the file being played, from 44.1kHz through to 96kHz.

Setup requires no additional drivers, meeting all USB Audio Class standards out of the box, and compatibility covers Apple and Windows computers alongside iOS and Android devices. A DragonTail USB-A to USB-C adaptor is included, making it straightforward to connect to modern laptops and smartphones without a separate adaptor. It is a compact, genuinely high-performing source upgrade that brings a meaningful improvement to headphone listening from any device it is connected to.

What AudioQuest say about the DragonFly Copper USB DAC

AudioQuest DragonFly Copper, the latest and most sophisticated member of the award-winning DragonFly franchise, is a portable USB DAC (digital-to-analog converter), preamplifier, and headphone amplifier that bypasses the audio circuitry in laptops, computers, and smartphones to deliver cleaner, clearer, more naturally beautiful music to headphones, powered speakers, or complete audio systems. Featuring a highly efficient 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC chip, a copper-plated RF-draining case, and twice the output power of any previous DragonFly, Copper delivers class-leading performance matched by physical and sonic beauty.

Long Live DragonFly

Since its introduction in 2012, the award-winning AudioQuest DragonFly DAC-preamp-headphone amp has received enthusiastic recommendations from the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and Men's Health while earning glowing praise from the world’s leading hi-fi publications. With more than 300,000 DragonFlys sold worldwide, our little critter has proven capable of disarming even the most rigid audio skeptic.

DragonFly Today

Like all AudioQuest products, the award-winning DragonFly has benefited from gradual refinements made possible by better parts, better materials, and AudioQuest's own insatiable desire for better sound.

DragonFly Copper maintains everything that made its predecessors such a success:

Beautiful sound from all audio files: MP3 to Hi-Res
Compatible with Apple® and Windows® PCs, iOS and Android devices
Drives Headphones; Feeds Preamps, Amps, and Powered Speakers
Phone, tablet, or computer controls the output level
Meets all USB Audio Class (UAC) standards; requires no additional drivers
Dragonfly emblem changes color to indicate playback status and the sampling rate of the file being played: red (standby), green (44.1kHz), blue (48kHz), yellow (88.2kHz), light blue (96kHz).

Compared to previous DragonFlys, Copper offers:

2x greater output power
25% lower current draw
High-conductivity copper-plated case for improved RF-noise drainage

Power, Efficiency, Beauty

AudioQuest's careful selection of a new 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC/headphone amp allowed for the implementation of a slightly smaller processor than the one employed in previous designs. In turn, power consumption was reduced by about 25% while significantly improving overall supply-chain efficiency. AudioQuest was able to do more with less.

DragonFly designer Gordon Rankin then did what he does best: He optimized the new DragonFly parts for ultimate performance, reducing distortion to a level significantly below that of previous models.

Drawing 25% less current and delivering two times as much output power as any previous DragonFly, Copper is the most powerful and efficient DAC AudioQuest has ever produced. Its new copper case, informed and inspired by the RF-draining barrels of AudioQuest's Mythical Creatures interconnects, isn’t merely gorgeous, but, like every other aspect of the DAC’s design, has been implemented for improved performance.

We believe AudioQuest DragonFly Copper faithfully carries forward the esteemed legacy of the DragonFly family, and we hope it introduces many more listeners to the immersive, emotionally compelling musical experience that hundreds of thousands of DragonFly owners have already enjoyed.

About AudioQuest

Since 1980, AudioQuest, headquartered in Irvine, California, has been a leading developer, manufacturer, and distributor of high-performance audio/video products and custom-install solutions. Although best known for our comprehensive range of analog, digital, and AC power cables, our portfolio has expanded to a diverse assortment of products, including the multi award-winning DragonFly DACs, Niagara and PowerQuest power products.

Our ultimate goal is the same today as was from the start: Do No Harm! By this we mean that all cables and components, to the extent that is technologically feasible, should get out of the music’s way by inducing the least amount of noise and distortion.

About AudioQuest

Californian cable maker covering analogue, digital, speaker and power cables, with patented conductor and dielectric designs.

AudioQuest is based in Irvine, California, and makes cables for nearly every connection in a system: analogue interconnects, USB, HDMI and Ethernet, speaker cables and AC power cables. Its designs come back to four ideas: solid conductors, directionality, noise dissipation and the quality of the metal.

Conductor and metal choices come first

Solid conductors and metal quality are two of the ideas AudioQuest returns to across its range. HyperLitz, a conductor construction patented in 1988, is another. Directionality, the principle that a cable is built to carry signal in one direction, is the fourth.

Noise is treated as a separate design problem

AudioQuest lists its noise-dissipation technologies as ZERO-Tech, RF/ND-Tech and the Dielectric-Bias System, which was patented in 2004. They are applied alongside the conductor work rather than in place of it, and which ones a cable carries depends on the model and its price.

One brand across the whole system

AudioQuest also makes AC power cables, Niagara and PowerQuest power conditioners and DragonFly DACs alongside its analogue, digital and speaker cables. If you are building or upgrading a system, that means every cable in the chain, and the power feeding it, can come from one design approach.

Why we stock AudioQuest

We took AudioQuest on for HDMI. When the 1.4 spec arrived in 2009 they were the first supplier who could actually get the cables to us, at a point when almost nobody could. The power cables turned out to be just as good, and they are now a bigger part of what we sell than the HDMI ever was.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start with power (cables & distribution), then upgrade signal cabling, support (Hi-Fi Racks) and isolation accessories. These incremental changes can unlock more from your existing gear. Once you have the basic essentials, then you can look at further upgrades, such as fuses, cartridges, better isolation and more!
Loading...
It is usually best to address obvious issues first, such as unstable equipment placement or poor isolation, before adding more specialised accessories. Call (0208 905 1555) or Email (sales@futureshop.co.uk) one of our consultants to identify an ideal upgrade path for your system.
Loading...
A high-quality hi-fi system is built around a few core elements working together. At its heart is a source, such as a streamer, turntable, CD player, or digital audio player, which provides the music. This signal is then shaped and boosted by amplification, which may include an integrated amplifier, headphone amplifier, or phono stage depending on the system. The sound is delivered through speakers or headphones, which have a major influence on the overall character of what you hear. Supporting components also play an important role. DACs improve digital playback quality, cartridges and phono stages are vital for vinyl, and hi-fi racks, speaker stands, and isolation products help equipment perform consistently. A balanced system does not rely on one standout component, but on how well everything works together.
Loading...
Isolation and support products can make a clearly audible difference, especially in resolving systems. Vibrations from floors, speakers, and even airborne sound can interfere with sensitive components like turntables, DACs, and amplifiers. Proper speaker stands help speakers perform as intended by improving stability, positioning, and bass control. Hi-fi racks and isolation platforms reduce unwanted resonance, helping systems sound cleaner, more focused, and more consistent. While these products may not change the sound as dramatically as speakers or cartridges, they often unlock performance that is already there but being masked by vibration or poor placement.
Loading...
That depends on the starting point of the system. If the fundamentals are weak, such as entry-level speakers, poor setup, or missing core components, starting with the basics usually brings the biggest gains. A well-matched foundation allows later upgrades to shine. If the system is already balanced, upgrading individual components can be very effective. Improvements such as a better cartridge, DAC, phono stage, or isolation can refine detail, clarity, and realism. The most rewarding upgrades tend to be those that address the system’s weakest link rather than focusing on one category alone.
Loading...
In many systems, the biggest improvement comes from upgrading speakers or headphones, as these shape the sound more than any other component. For vinyl systems, the cartridge and phono stage are often the most influential upgrades. In digital systems, a higher-quality DAC or streamer can significantly improve clarity and timing. Beyond electronics, addressing setup, isolation, and support is often overlooked but highly effective. Improving speaker positioning, adding proper stands, or isolating sensitive equipment can deliver noticeable gains without changing core components. The best first upgrade is usually the one that removes the most obvious limitation in the current system.
Loading...
There are lots of components and tweaks that can offer a lift in performance, however, our current favourite is the UK 13A mains fuse from your wall socket to your distribution block or amplifier. This is an often overlooked component in most systems but the improvements far outweigh it's size and cost.
