Ferrum Audio BROEN network streaming transport

The Ferrum BROEN is a network streaming transport built around a clear engineering philosophy: take a stream of digital audio data and keep it as clean and accurate as possible from the moment it enters the unit to the moment it leaves. At the heart of the design is the SERCE DDC, a proprietary digital-to-digital conversion module with FPGA-based reclocking and ultra-low jitter audio clocks on all synchronous outputs. The input and output domains are kept entirely separate throughout, and all audio outputs sit behind a galvanic isolation barrier, covering both the synchronous outputs and the dedicated USB DAC connections. The result is a transport that delivers a genuinely quiet and stable digital signal regardless of what is happening on the network side of the device.

Streaming capability is handled by Volumio, a platform with a broad and well-established ecosystem supporting Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay, UPnP/DLNA, Bluetooth, web radio, and multi-room playback across up to six synchronised zones. Music can be played from an internal M.2 NVMe SSD slot, USB drives, or a NAS, and CD playback and ripping are also supported. Network connectivity covers dual-band Wi-Fi as standard, with an SFP socket allowing the addition of either a standard RJ45 ethernet module or a fibre optic module for those who want to keep electrical noise from the network entirely out of the signal path. Over-the-air firmware updates keep the platform current.

Audio outputs cover AES/EBU, S/PDIF coaxial, S/PDIF optical, I2S via HDMI with configurable pinout, and two dedicated USB DAC outputs via Type-A and Type-C. The BROEN integrates directly with the Ferrum WANDLA DAC via Ferrum Streaming Control Technology, displaying track information on the WANDLA's screen and allowing full playback control through its touchscreen and remote. Performance can be taken further still by adding the Ferrum HYPSOS power supply, which connects via the proprietary Ferrum Power Link cable to deliver optimised, voltage-sensed power to both components simultaneously.

What Ferrum Audio say about the BROEN Network Streaming Transport

With BROEN we have created a truly unique streaming proposition following all of Ferrum’s core values. Like we did with HYPSOS, BROEN’s design starts at the very beginning of any digital transport, a sequence of zeros and ones and keeps it as clean as it possibly can. From beginning to end.

This meant going back to the digital drawing board and create a new digital heart for BROEN, called SERCE DDC. While keeping the in- and output domains perfectly separated and the audio outputs isolated, we also introduced an SFP socket to give our community the ultimate choice in digital connectivity, offering wireless as standard, plus electrical (RJ45 ethernet) and optical (SFP) options for communication with the home network. Supporting the most relevant streaming options, we also offer an internal SSD slot for physical storage of your music files. Last but not least BROEN is expandable with WANDLA to create the ultimate streaming DAC combo and upgradable with HYPSOS. WANDLA like a Formula 1 racing car. Like the F1 constructor’s team building the best racing car, Ferrum created the best engine for The Converter.

Made for Streaming

BROEN is Powered by Volumio. This means you get full access to the Volumio streaming ecosystem, loved by more than half a million users, with Spotify & Spotify Connect, TIDAL & TIDAL Connect, Qobuz & Qobuz Connect, AirPlay, UPnP/DLNA renderer, web radios, CD playback, multi-room playback, AI-powered SuperSearch, Infinity Playback, and extended album/artist metadata.

Made for WANDLA

While you can control BROEN perfectly from your smartphone, tablet and computer, BROEN seamlessly integrates with WANDLA using our FSCT. Artist and title information will be displayed on WANDLA’s screen and can be controlled with a finger’s touch on WANDLA’s screen or remote.

Made for HYPSOS

BROEN performs beautifully right out of the box, but you can take its performance above and beyond when pairing it with HYPSOS. Using the proprietary Ferrum Power Link (FPL) connection with 4TSD voltage sensing, both components will perform to their absolute maximum, unleashing unheard-of musicality.

Made for the Future

With BROEN you get over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates, and a plugin capable platform. Apart from including an internal SSD slot, we’ve added an SFP slot where you have the option of using a standard SFP ethernet module or an SFP optical module to connect to an SFP switch keeping noise to an absolute minimum when connecting to the outside world. These features will keep BROEN up to date and future proof for many more years to come.

About Ferrum

Polish maker of DACs, headphone amplifiers and linear power supplies, designed and built in Warsaw.

Ferrum Audio is based in Warsaw, Poland, where its parent company designs and manufactures its products in-house. The range is built around the Wandla DAC and pre-amplifier, the OOR headphone amplifier and the Hypsos power supply, along with the power cables and splitter that connect them. You can build a compact system from these parts.

The Wandla is a DAC and pre-amplifier

The Wandla combines a DAC with a pre-amplifier, so it can take digital sources and feed an amplifier or powered speakers directly. It is the centre of the range, and the other products are designed to work around it. Check the product page for its inputs and outputs.

The OOR is a fully analogue headphone amplifier

The OOR is a balanced headphone amplifier. Ferrum describes it as fully analogue, with a discrete output stage. If you want to listen on headphones with a high-quality source, it can be paired with the Wandla or another DAC. Check the product page for the connections and power requirements.

The Hypsos power supply works with its cables

The Hypsos is a hybrid linear and switching power supply that outputs 5 to 30V at up to 6A. Ferrum also sells the Power Link and DC JACK power cables and a Power Splitter, so one supply can feed several Ferrum products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start with power (cables & distribution), then upgrade signal cabling, support (Hi-Fi Racks) and isolation accessories. These incremental changes can unlock more from your existing gear. Once you have the basic essentials, then you can look at further upgrades, such as fuses, cartridges, better isolation and more!
Loading...
It is usually best to address obvious issues first, such as unstable equipment placement or poor isolation, before adding more specialised accessories. Call (0208 905 1555) or Email (sales@futureshop.co.uk) one of our consultants to identify an ideal upgrade path for your system.
Loading...
A high-quality hi-fi system is built around a few core elements working together. At its heart is a source, such as a streamer, turntable, CD player, or digital audio player, which provides the music. This signal is then shaped and boosted by amplification, which may include an integrated amplifier, headphone amplifier, or phono stage depending on the system. The sound is delivered through speakers or headphones, which have a major influence on the overall character of what you hear. Supporting components also play an important role. DACs improve digital playback quality, cartridges and phono stages are vital for vinyl, and hi-fi racks, speaker stands, and isolation products help equipment perform consistently. A balanced system does not rely on one standout component, but on how well everything works together.
Loading...
Isolation and support products can make a clearly audible difference, especially in resolving systems. Vibrations from floors, speakers, and even airborne sound can interfere with sensitive components like turntables, DACs, and amplifiers. Proper speaker stands help speakers perform as intended by improving stability, positioning, and bass control. Hi-fi racks and isolation platforms reduce unwanted resonance, helping systems sound cleaner, more focused, and more consistent. While these products may not change the sound as dramatically as speakers or cartridges, they often unlock performance that is already there but being masked by vibration or poor placement.
Loading...
That depends on the starting point of the system. If the fundamentals are weak, such as entry-level speakers, poor setup, or missing core components, starting with the basics usually brings the biggest gains. A well-matched foundation allows later upgrades to shine. If the system is already balanced, upgrading individual components can be very effective. Improvements such as a better cartridge, DAC, phono stage, or isolation can refine detail, clarity, and realism. The most rewarding upgrades tend to be those that address the system’s weakest link rather than focusing on one category alone.
Loading...
In many systems, the biggest improvement comes from upgrading speakers or headphones, as these shape the sound more than any other component. For vinyl systems, the cartridge and phono stage are often the most influential upgrades. In digital systems, a higher-quality DAC or streamer can significantly improve clarity and timing. Beyond electronics, addressing setup, isolation, and support is often overlooked but highly effective. Improving speaker positioning, adding proper stands, or isolating sensitive equipment can deliver noticeable gains without changing core components. The best first upgrade is usually the one that removes the most obvious limitation in the current system.
Loading...
There are lots of components and tweaks that can offer a lift in performance, however, our current favourite is the UK 13A mains fuse from your wall socket to your distribution block or amplifier. This is an often overlooked component in most systems but the improvements far outweigh it's size and cost.
