Matrix Audio MA-SFP-LX-SM1310-LC Single-Mode SFP Fibre Module
The Matrix Audio SFP Module (MA-SFP-LX-SM1310-LC) is a 1.25G single-mode fibre optic transceiver made for the SFP/SFP+ ports on Matrix Audio's SS-1 and SS-1 Pro audio-grade network switches. Plugged into one of those ports, the module turns it into an optical connection, so the data feeding your streamer travels along the fibre as light rather than as an electrical signal on copper. Matrix Audio fitted SFP ports to the SS-1 series for exactly this reason: a fibre run between upstream network equipment and the audio system gives complete electrical isolation, so high-frequency noise picked up by the wider network has no conductive path into the hi-fi. The same module also fits Matrix Audio's digital audio players and transports that carry an SFP slot, including the MS-1 and NT-1.
The MA-SFP-LX-SM1310-LC operates at an optical wavelength of 1310nm over single-mode fibre (SMF), with a maximum transmission rate of 1.25Gbps and a maximum transmission distance of 10km. A duplex LC interface accepts a standard single-mode LC patch cable, which latches firmly into place, while the module itself clicks securely into the host port and is released with a pull tab. The SS-1 and SS-1 Pro SFP/SFP+ ports are rated for up to 10Gbps, so this module will run the link at its own 1.25Gbps ceiling, which is still comfortably more bandwidth than music streaming needs. With a 10km reach, cable length is no practical constraint in a home: the upstream network equipment can sit in a cupboard, loft or another room entirely while the fibre delivers an isolated connection to the listening position.
Matrix Audio recommends using optical modules of the same brand and specification at both ends of a link for the best compatibility and connection stability, so a matching MA-SFP-LX-SM1310-LC at each end is the sensible choice when linking an SS-1 switch to an MS-1 or NT-1, or one switch to another. The module is a Class 1 laser product and is sensitive to both static and dust, so keep the dust cap fitted until the fibre is connected and take anti-static precautions when handling it.

Streaming sits alongside the DACs
Matrix makes plain DACs as well as network-connected units. The mini-i and X-SABRE are DAC lines, while the Element series combines a streaming DAC with a network connection. That means you can choose between a simple converter and a streamer, depending on how you play your music.
Software that runs on the hardware
The MA Player system is a Linux-based high-resolution playback platform, and the MA Remote app controls it from Android, iOS and iPadOS devices. Because the software is Matrix's own, you control the streamer from the same app whichever model you choose.
Digital accessories for your network
Matrix also lists the SU-1 USB isolation switcher, the SI-1 network isolator and the SS-1 Pro network switch, plus clock sources. These are for digital systems where you want to tidy up the path between the network, the streamer and the DAC.
Why we stock Matrix
Matrix build complete units. You get the feature set you would normally find several price brackets higher: full connectivity, proper implementation, no obvious corners cut. If you want one box to do the job rather than three that each do a part of it, the value is hard to argue with.
