Ortofon MC X50 Hi-Fi Turntable Cartridge
The Ortofon MC X50 sits at the top of the MC X Series and represents the most complete expression of what the range is capable of. The stylus is a nude Micro Ridge diamond, a profile with an exceptionally narrow side radius of 2.5 microns that makes contact with a very precise section of the groove wall. The practical benefit is superior tracking of high-frequency information, reduced inner groove distortion on the final tracks of a record, and a longer stylus life due to the way the contact patch distributes wear. It is a stylus geometry that earns its place at the top of a cartridge range rather than simply being a specification upgrade on paper.
The cantilever is boron, a material chosen for its rigidity and low mass relative to the aluminium used lower in the range. A stiffer, lighter cantilever follows the groove with greater precision and transmits the stylus movement to the coils more accurately, which contributes directly to the MC X50's channel separation of 28dB and frequency response accurate to within 1dB. The quad coils are wound with high-purity silver wire throughout, and a newly formulated rubber suspension compound has been developed specifically for this model rather than carried over from elsewhere in the range, reflecting the level of attention given to how the cartridge behaves dynamically under real listening conditions.
The body shares the MC X Series' MIM-moulded honeycomb stainless-steel construction with PVD surface treatment, providing a mechanically stable platform that keeps the cartridge composed under the demands of the stylus and cantilever system above it. Recommended tracking force is 2.0g with a load impedance above 50 ohms, consistent with the rest of the series and compatible with any capable MC phono stage.
MC X50 Technology
The MC X50 represents the highest level of performance in the MC X Series. Its nude Micro Ridge diamond stylus ensures exceptional tracking accuracy and long-term stability. With its exceptionally narrow side radius, it delivers superior high-frequency tracking, reduced inner groove distortion, and remarkable longevity. Combined with a boron cantilever, it provides superior transient response, resolution, and low distortion. A newly developed rubber suspension featuring a newly formulated compound has been engineered specifically for the MC X50.
A New Benchmark in Analog Perfection
In the world of vinyl playback, the cartridge is where the journey begins. A pivotal point where music rises from the groove and transforms into immersive soundscapes. With the MC X Series, Ortofon sets a new benchmark in MC cartridge design, pushing premium Moving Coil technology to unprecedented levels of performance.
Pure Silver Coil System
All MC X cartridges feature coils wound with high-purity silver wire. The use of premium materials is to ensure exceptional signal clarity, delivering sound with unmatched precision and preserving every detail without interference.
Magnet system
The MC X Series introduces a newly developed magnet system with a one-piece pole cylinder integrated into a rear magnet yoke. Engineered for maximum magnetic efficiency and paired with pure silver coils, this configuration ensures a clean, powerful signal path that elevates overall performance.

Colour names in the core ranges, numbers and names elsewhere
Ortofon's core ranges, 2M, MC Cadenza and MC Quintet, use colours to mark the steps, such as Red, Blue, Bronze and Black. Ortofon describes Red as open and dynamic with a touch of warmth, and Blue as adding detail and resolution. Other ranges use numbers, like MC X, or names, like Vertex and Verismo in the Exclusive series.
Moving magnet, moving coil and mono
Ortofon builds both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, so it covers the two main ways of generating a signal from a groove. It also makes mono and 78rpm cartridges for older records, and plug-and-play headshells, which arrive with the cartridge already mounted.
A series to suit most turntables
The catalogue is organised in series rather than a single line, and Ortofon says its cartridges suit the majority of turntables now on the market. You still need to check compatibility with your tonearm before buying, because a cartridge's weight and compliance have to suit it.

Ortofon are the cartridge name most vinyl listeners already trust, and they cover the full span from a first serious upgrade to the high end. That range is why we carry them. Whether you are replacing a worn stylus or rebuilding a front end properly, you can be sent to one brand and be right.
