Sbooster BOTW Upgrade AC Power Supply - 24V AC
The Sbooster BOTW Upgrade AC Power Supply addresses a weak point that many vinyl systems share: the small, inexpensive AC/AC adaptor supplied in the box with a turntable or phono stage. Introduced in January 2020 after a decade of Sbooster building linear supplies for audio and video equipment, it is designed as a direct one-for-one replacement for those stock supplies, and is aimed squarely at AC powered devices such as Rega and Thorens turntables and phono stages including the Benz Micro PP1. The design draws on Sbooster's established BOTW P&P ECO MKII linear power supply platform, carrying over the engineering that makes those units effective.
At its heart is an oversized audio-grade toroidal transformer, specified with generous headroom and fitted with both electrostatic and high-frequency magnetic shielding to stop transformer-borne noise radiating into the components sitting nearby, which matters a great deal when the load is a sensitive phono stage handling signals measured in millivolts. Incoming mains passes through a dual-stage filter with an earth line choke to reduce the noise arriving from the household supply, while an anti-oscillation circuit using Wima capacitors keeps the output stable and free from the ringing that can develop in a supply feeding a reactive load.
Output is delivered over a 16AWG shielded cable terminated with gold-plated connector pins, and Sbooster supply custom AC plugs in the common sizes so the unit can be matched to the original equipment without adaptation. This is the 24V AC version, for turntables and phono stages that are supplied with a 24V AC adaptor. Before ordering, check against Sbooster's compatibility list that your device runs from 24V AC rather than DC: some turntables, including several Rega models, use a 24V DC motor supply and need the BOTW P&P ECO instead.
What Sbooster say about the BOTW Upgrade AC Power Supply
In January 2020 after a decade of supplying linear power supplies for upgrading countless audio and video related equipment, we introduced our first BOTW upgrade AC power supply for audio equipment. The BOTW AC Power Supply is designed as an upgrade for AC powered audio devices, such as phono stages like the Benz Micro PP1 and as a '1 on 1' replacement for stock supplied basic AC/AC power supplies, which are supplied with turntables from brands like Rega and Thorens.
Stability
A low cost EL transformer has not only the lowest efficiency of all available transformer types, a major drawback is the very poor load regulation of this transformer type. The load regulation is the ratio of the AC output voltage measured with no-load and full-load conditions. With the low cost EL transformer this load regulation is around 20% or worse. The poor load regulation leads to instability and degrades the performance of an audio device significantly.
With the BOTW upgrade AC power supply our goal is to ensure the highest load regulation as possible. For this we use a highly oversized audio grade toroidal transformer. The combination of the technical design and large power reserve of this transformer ensures a very tight load-regulation with ditto stability.
Low noise
With an AC/AC power supply you would expect that the output of the adapter shows a perfect sinewave of 50 or 60Hz: Unfortunately this is not the case. All pollution, that is present on your mains grid, will be present on the output of the AC/AC adapter as well. To prevent, that this mains pollution enters your audio device, the BOTW AC starts immediately with the purification of the AC mains power. The built-in dual stage mains filter with upgraded gold plated audio purpose fuse and earth line choke removes the pollution even before it reaches the transformer.
Turntables
To make the BOTW AC power supply perfect suitable for turntable applications we have added an electrostatic and high frequent magnetic shielding to the transformer as well. An anti-oscillation circuit with Wima capacitors ensures a stable operation of the BOTW AC power supply regardless the type of AC powered audio device. Last but not least, we use our custom-made 16AWG shielded output cable with gold plated connector pins to ensure a low loss distribution of the purified AC power to your device.
