Shunyata Reseach SIGMA-X XLR Interconnect Cable - Pair

The Shunyata Research Sigma-X XLR sits a tier below the flagship Omega-X and brings the same core engineering to a more attainable cable. The headline technology is TAPc, the Transverse Axial Polarizer, a patent-pending system that couples to the electromagnetic fields surrounding a signal conductor and behaves like a polariser, passively reducing the electromagnetic distortion heard as glare. Shunyata describe its effect as a drop in perceived noise floor with a marked improvement in timing and coherency, and claim it is recognisable on first listen across a wide range of systems. The Sigma-X carries a dual TAPc module containing 40 elements.

Conductors are ultra-pure OCC copper, drawn by the Ohno continuous casting process so the crystal structure runs unbroken along the length of the wire rather than being interrupted by the grain boundaries a conventionally drawn conductor carries. These sit in a fluorocarbon dielectric, a material normally reserved for aerospace and satellite wiring, chosen for very low dielectric absorption, high dielectric strength and heat resistance, all of which Shunyata connect to reduced dynamic compression and better low-level resolution. The XLR uses a twin-axial construction with two symmetrical signal conductors and a 100% foil shield, which is the arrangement that lets a balanced connection reject common-mode noise picked up along the run.

Every Sigma-X cable then undergoes four days of continuous KPIP v2 processing, Shunyata's Kinetic Phase Inversion Process, which refines the conductor metals at atomic level to cut burn-in time and settle the cable's performance sooner. Terminations use gold and copper contacts in a black chrome finish. Cables are hand-built at Shunyata's factory in Poulsbo, Washington, then tested for continuity and polarity by two separate technicians and HiPOT tested for insulation breakdown at 1,200 VAC. Standard length is 1.00 metre in a black flex jacket, covered by a limited lifetime warranty.

What Shunyata Research say about the Sigma-X

A Sonic Experience Like No Other

Sigma-X Analog Interconnects represent a major advancement in Shunyata Research's engineering. Built on years of research and innovation, Sigma-X combines cutting-edge technologies that allow analog systems to perform with exceptional clarity and dynamic range, setting a new standard for high-resolution sound.

Designed to meet the demands of world-class audio systems, Sigma-X interconnects leverage Shunyata Research's advanced TAPc (Transaxial Polarization) technology, which further reduces signal distortion and noise interference. The result is a highly refined sonic experience that serves as a benchmark for superior noise reduction, harmonic detail, weight and musical realism.

For those seeking top-tier performance the Sigma-X provides a true reference standard - delivering profound musicality and technical excellence.

TAPc (Transverse Axial Polarizer) is a patent-pending technology that couples to the electromagnetic fields surrounding electrical or signal conductors. TAPc behaves like a polarizer, passively reducing electromagnetic distortion that presents as a type of glare on sound or images.

The sonic impact of TAPc is unmistakable. There is a profound drop in perceived noise floor, effortlessly portrayed dynamics and an immediate improvement in the rendering of timing and coherency in sound. These performance elements are unique to TAPc and remain unaddressed by competing technologies of any kind. Even casual listeners can recognize the effect TAPc has upon first listen. Results are consistent across a wide range of components and systems. Essentially, the TAPc modules act as force multipliers, elevating the listening experience to levels many would not have thought possible.

KPIP v2™ Shunyata Research’s proprietary Kinetic Phase Inversion Process includes four days of continuous KPIP v2™ processing which refines conductor metals at the atomic level. This dramatically reduces burn-in time and significantly improves sonic performance, delivering a relaxed and life-like presentation. When compared to the original process, KPIP v2™ represents a dramatic performance upgrade on par with a component-level upgrade.

Shunyata Research produces select cables using a ‌Precision Matched Z (‌‌PMZ) concept. This means that tolerances of the conductor surface, dielectric extrusion, and the precision of the braided shield are held to minute variances. To achieve these tight tolerances, the extrusion and braiding machines must be run at one-quarter speed during the manufacturing process. (Note: Z means impedance)

Fluorocarbon dielectrics are usually only found in wire used in the aerospace industry, satellites and only the most expensive audiophile cabling. It has special electrical characteristics; very low dielectric absorption, high dielectric strength and exceptional heat resistance.  When used in audio and power cables is reduces the perception of dynamic compression and it improves sonic low-level resolution and clarity. Crystal clear transient detail.

‌‌ArNi® is a type of wire created by Shunyata Research designed to be the finest quality wire available for audio purposes. It begins with the highest purity of copper available – OFE C10100 or Ohno (single crystal). Then it is formed in virtual hollow tubes eliminating skin effects and eddy current distortions. A premium fluorocarbon insulation minimizes dielectric absorption and re-radiation, greatly improving resolution and clarity. In addition, the wire undergoes our proprietary KPIP™ process.

About Shunyata Research

Founded in 1997 by Caelin Gabriel, Shunyata Research is a science and research-based company dedicated to enhancing the music listening experience. Gabriel's passion for improving his audio system led to the creation of Shunyata Research, which has since grown into an internationally acclaimed high-performance electrical and cabling system manufacturer. Shunyata Research empowers signal-critical electronic systems to achieve unprecedented performance levels, focusing on removing noise, optimising signal paths, and eliminating impedance. Shunyata Research's state-of-the-art manufacturing and design facility spans 18,000 square feet and is located just outside Seattle, in Washington State. The company offers a comprehensive range of products across various categories, including digital cables such as USB cables, audio cables, power cables, grounding products, and power distributors.

Shunyata Research's cable offerings encompass multiple ranges tailored to meet different performance needs. From the entry-level Venom range, the lineup progresses through the Delta, Alpha, and Sigma ranges and culminates in the top-tier Omega range. This comprehensive selection ensures customers can find the ideal cables to optimise their audio-visual systems. In addition to cables, Shunyata Research excels in power distribution solutions. Hollow-tube conductors to limit skin effect

VTX conductors are made in a virtual hollow-tube form from OFE Alloy 101 copper, a design intended to reduce skin effect and eddy currents. VTX-Ag speaker cables add a pure silver centre conductor inside a ring of pure copper, with fluorocarbon insulation to limit dielectric absorption.

Noise treated in the cable and in the mains

TAPc, a patent-pending technology, couples to the electromagnetic fields around a conductor with the aim of reducing electromagnetic distortion. ΞTRON, which is patented, addresses dielectric absorption using dual signal paths. On the power side, CCI filters reduce noise generated by components without heavy transformers or coils.

Metals are processed before they are built into cable

Shunyata treats its conductor metals with KPIP v2, a four-day continuous process that it says refines the metals at an atomic level and shortens burn-in time. Joints are sonically welded rather than soldered, and the CopperCONN connectors use pure copper contacts.

Why we stock Shunyata

Shunyata are not a brand you can simply decide to stock, and getting an account took some doing. Their cable construction is unlike anything else we carry, and their sister division builds power systems for medical imaging, which tells you how seriously they treat noise. The customers who try them very rarely go back to what they had.
