Astell&Kern AK HC5 Portable USB DAC
The Astell&Kern AK HC5 is designed to bring true high-end audio performance to everyday devices, transforming smartphones, laptops, and gaming consoles into serious hi-fi sources. Using the same core technologies found in Astell&Kern’s flagship players, the HC5 combines a premium DAC architecture with precise power control to deliver clean, dynamic, and highly detailed sound from a pocket-sized USB DAC.
At its heart is the AKM AK4191EQ digital processor paired with the AK4499EX DAC, a combination previously reserved for top-tier digital audio players. High Driving Mode ensures stable, powerful output for demanding headphones, while a dedicated amplifier stage with strong noise rejection keeps the signal clean regardless of the connected source. DAR technology allows optional upsampling for enhanced resolution and scale, and six selectable DAC filters let listeners fine-tune presentation to suit their music and headphones.
Usability is equally considered. A 150-step volume wheel offers fine control, supported by a clear OLED display that shows playback and system status at a glance. Dual noise-shielded cabling reduces interference, while support for both UAC 2.0 and UAC 1.0 ensures wide compatibility, including direct use with consoles such as PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Compact, lightweight, and supplied with a premium protective case, the AK HC5 is an ideal solution for listeners who want reference-level sound without carrying a full-sized player.
Here is what Astell&Kern say about the HC5
Created to achieve perfect sound, AK HC5 sets a new standard for USB DAC cables. The AK HC5 embodies Astell&Kern’s audio philosophy and precise engineering in a compact form, delivering a level of perfection beyond its predecessors. Equipped with a flagship-grade DAC and optimized power control, it delivers flawless sound performance unmatched by any other USB DAC.
Features
- AK4191EQ + AK4499EX
- Constant High Driving, DAR (Digital Audio Remaster) Support
- 1.62" OLED Display
- 150-step Volume Control
- Dual Noise-Shielded Cable
- Roon Tested (Certification in progress)
The First USB DAC Cable with AK4499EX
For the first time in a USB DAC cable, the AK4499EX DAC— previously only used in flagship DAPs—delivers top-tier sound performance. The combination of the AK4191EQ digital processor and AK4499EX DAC perfectly separates and processes digital and analog signals, minimizing noise interference and reproducing even the finest details with precision. Experience premium, digital-audio-player–level sound quality through a USB DAC cable.
Compact Body, Ultimate Performance
The High Driving Mode technology perfected in the SP4000 now powers the AK HC5, achieving exceptional sound performance in a remarkably compact form. A horizontal OPAMP layout delivers driving power on a completely different level from typical portable USB DACs. Rich density, deep spaciousness, and powerful energy — experience flagship-grade sound from a compact size.
Noise Suppression Design for Pure, Clean Sound
Due to the nature of USB DAC cables that receive power from external devices, minimizing sound degradation caused by incoming noise is essential. The AK HC5 features a dedicated amplifier with excellent PSRR (Power Supply Rejection Ratio) / CMRR (Common Mode Rejection Ratio) noise-suppression performance, delivering pure and clean sound no matter what device it is connected to.
Dual Noise Shielded Cable
To minimize noise and deliver clean, lifelike original sound even over wired connections, a Dual Noise-Shielded Cable design was adopted. The internal conductors are made of tin-plated copper wire to prevent corrosion and oxidation, while their high tensile strength enhances durability. Each conductor is individually insulated with TPE to minimize signal interference, and an aluminum film shield provides the first layer of protection against external electromagnetic noise. An additional tinned copper braided shield further suppresses any remaining noise, ensuring exceptional signal purity. The outer fabric jacket not only enhances durability and flexibility but also adds a refined, premium appearance.
Precision You Can See and Feel
The 150-step volume wheel, using the same encoder system found in Astell&Kern players, allows for precise and fine-tuned volume adjustment. A 1.62-inch OLED display provides a quick overview of current settings and playback information, transforming every touch and adjustment into a seamless and intuitive experience.
Vivid Sound Perfected with DAR
DAR (Digital Audio Remaster) technology upsamples the input digital audio’s sample rate using a high-precision algorithm, delivering playback quality that surpasses the limits of the original data. This results in more detailed expression and an expanded dynamic range, reproducing natural, lifelike sound that’s closer to the original recording.

Made with a premium polyurethane material from Synt3, an Italian specialist manufacturer, the case provides perfect protection while delivering a soft, refined texture that feels both luxurious and comfortable to the touch.
Notes for Product Use
- Compatibility: Compatible with most Android and iOS smartphones/tablets, as well as Windows 10/11 and macOS. Compatibility may vary depending on the connected device’s hardware, software, and system limitations.
- Driver Installation (Windows): When connected to a Windows PC, the driver will install automatically. For high-resolution audio playback, please install the dedicated USB DAC driver available under Support -> Download on our website.
- Earphone/Headphone Standards: Supports CTIA-standard 4-pole earphones/headphones. OMTP standard is not supported.
- High-Resolution Playback (Smartphones): For DSD and high-resolution PCM playback on smartphones, a separate playback app (free or paid) must be installed. Using the default player will cause downsampling, so use a dedicated playback app for full-quality sound.

Depending on the connected device, the output may automatically default to maximum volume upon initial connection—please verify volume before use. When connecting to an Astell&Kern player, the output volume will be fixed at maximum and cannot be adjusted from the player. Listening at maximum volume may cause serious hearing damage. Astell&Kern is not responsible for any injury or damage resulting from improper or careless use.
- Firmware Updates: Firmware updates may be released to improve system stability. For details, please refer to Support -> Download on our website.
Design
‘Solid Flow - The Harmony of Solidity and Flexibility’
The design concept of the AK HC5 is “Solid Flow.” “Solid” represents Astell&Kern’s unwavering commitment to powerful, high-fidelity sound performance, while “Flow” embodies the elegant curves and smooth usability that enhance everyday convenience. By merging these two contrasting ideals, the AK HC5 expresses Astell&Kern’s harmony of strength and fluidity, a design that feels both dynamic and refined when held in the hand.

About Astell&Kern
Astell&Kern is the ultimate digital music source that brings you Mastering Quality Sound or MQS. Astell means ‘Stars’ in Latin and Kern means ‘Center’ in German. We believe Astell&Kern is the center of music.
Today, original music performances can be captured in digital almost exactly as they were performed due to new, advanced recording technology currently available. However, these high quality recordings are mainly listened to through inferior sound formats, such as MP3 or through streaming services. With the debut of the MP3 format, music lovers sacrificed sound quality for the convenience of being able to carry their music collection wherever they went. Because the MP3 format heavily compresses files for the sake of convenience, the vocals and instruments you hear are only an inferior version of the original. The soundstage and the ambience of the original performance often disappears when listening to compressed MP3 music. After pondering these issues, Astell&Kern was our solution to poor sound quality for the sake of portability, and our way in reviving the original sound quality of music, MQS, for music artists, recording engineers, and professionals.
Astell&Kern's pursuit is to provide natural and original sound without distortion. It showcases the presence of the original recording with miniscule details you may not have noticed from other music systems, while playing back high-resolution music bit by bit, exactly as it was recorded. The ability to play back the exact recording of any live performance is what Astell&Kern is known for.
The power of true sound from Astell&Kern can now be experienced and has been part of many famous audio exhibitions around the world. Astell&Kern is now admired by music lovers from many countries, including the USA, China, Japan, UK, France, and many more around the world.

Players are grouped into named series
A&ultima is the flagship line, with the SP4000 and SP3000 among its models. A&futura includes the SE300 and A&norma includes the SR35. The PD series, which includes the PD20, and the KANN line, which includes the KANN ULTRA, are separate families. Each series sits at a different level of price and specification.
High-resolution files are supported across the range
Astell&Kern lists playback of 24-bit files at sample rates from 44.1kHz to 192kHz, and supports MQS, its Mastering Quality Sound label. If you want to play DSD or sample rates beyond that, check the specification of the model you are considering before you buy.
Earphones, speakers and cases sit alongside the players
Astell&Kern also makes earphones, headphones, speakers and accessories, including cases. It has worked with VOLK Audio on the STELLA in-ear monitors. If you are buying a player, the catalogue lets you choose the earphones and the case from the same maker.
Why we stock Astell&Kern
We had DACs but nothing portable, so we went looking. Astell&Kern do one thing and have done it longer than almost anyone, with a range that runs from a first serious player up to real money. If you have invested in in-ear monitors and are still feeding them from a phone, this is the gap they fill.
