Atacama Atabites SMD-Z 7HD Inert Filler
Mass loading a speaker stand changes what it does acoustically. An unfilled hollow steel tube has its own resonant frequency and will colour the sound reaching the speaker above it. Fill that tube with a dense, inert material and the resonant frequency drops sharply, the stored energy dissipates rather than re-radiating, and the stand becomes a genuinely neutral platform. This is the principle behind Atabites: a high-density zinc-coated steel filler developed by Atacama specifically for use in their own stands, and compatible with most other tubular speaker stands on the market.
Atabites are supplied in 7kg tubs. At a density of 4.18kg per litre, a single tub represents considerably more mass than an equivalent volume of sand, which makes them a more efficient filler for stands with limited internal volume. The 2-4mm micro-disc format packs densely and evenly without bridging, and the zinc coating protects against oxidation over the long term. The result is a filler that performs consistently and does not degrade in service.
How much you use is a matter of experimentation. Atacama's guidance is that filling to between half and two-thirds capacity gives the best balance of bass extension, detail retrieval, and soundstage width. Overfilling tends to produce a duller, more compressed sound. The capacity table below shows the maximum fill weight for each Atacama stand model; working up from half that figure is a practical starting point for most systems.
Here is what Atacama says about Atabites SMD-Z 7HD
Traditional speaker stands can introduce unwanted vibrations that muddle your audio. Atabites acts as a sonic sponge, absorbing these vibrations and creating a more neutral platform for your speakers. The result is clearer, more accurate sound with reduced coloration. Atabites' dense composition effectively dampens vibrations, minimising resonance within the speaker stands. The size of Atabites micro-discs (2-4mm) ensures consistent sonic performance across the entire filler. The innovative zinc coating protects Atabites from oxidation and degradation, ensuring long-lasting performance.
Features
- High-density zinc-coated steel: 4.18kg per litre, substantially denser than sand at 1.53kg per litre, giving more mass in less volume
- 2-4mm micro-disc particle size: Consistent particle size ensures even packing and uniform sonic performance throughout the stand
- Zinc coating: Protects against oxidation and long-term degradation; some discs may have a single-sided satin black finish for batch identification, which does not affect performance
- Sold by weight: Supplied in 7kg tubs due to the density of the material; some settling during transport is normal
- Universal compatibility: Suitable for most tubular speaker stands, not only Atacama and Apollo models
- Not suitable for Aurora 6 speaker stands
How to fill your stands
Speaker stands can introduce unwanted resonances that colour your sound. Atabites acts as a sonic tuner, absorbing vibrations and creating a more neutral platform. The ideal fill amount depends on speaker type, cable configuration, room acoustics, and personal preference. As a starting point, filling to between half and two-thirds capacity generally produces the best balance of bass depth, detail, and soundstage. Filling beyond two-thirds can lead to a dull, lifeless presentation with softened mids. Always check with your stand manufacturer for suitability before filling non-Atacama stands.

About Atacama Audio
Atacama Audio, formerly known as Sambell Engineering Ltd, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1969 as a sub-contract engineering company specialising in aerospace work. With a strong reputation as a trusted supplier to prestigious companies like Rolls Royce and British Aerospace, Atacama Audio transitioned into manufacturing its own commercial products. In 1987, Atacama Audio developed an innovative HiFi speaker stand, which garnered positive feedback from local retailers. Despite being temporarily put on hold in 1988 due to overwhelming manufacturing demands, the interest in the speaker stands remained. The success continued with various award-winning products, including the Atacama Eris Eco 5, Evoque Eco 60-40, Moseco Speaker Stand, and Apollo Storm 6 modular HiFi rack. As a company committed to innovation, Atacama Audio constantly explores new concepts in HiFi furniture design. Their latest range, the NeXXus series of speaker stands, offers adaptability, upgradability, and a wide range of customisation options. Atacama Audio and Apollo HiFi furniture strives to exceed customer expectations, providing exceptional HiFi speaker stands and AV rack support designs. The company looks forward to introducing even more innovative designs in the future.

Isolation is built into the rack
The Evoque Eco range uses ASIST damping gaskets as standard, along with a mechanical grounding system and modular isolation components. The SE2 versions add vectored resonance channels and contoured shelving. All of this is aimed at controlling vibration at the shelf, where it affects your sources.
Bamboo and oak, in several finishes
Bamboo panels are used in the Evoque range, and solid oak in the Apollo Storm and Apollo Podium ranges. Finishes include natural oak, dark oak, natural bamboo and dark bamboo, plus a Premium Black Edition, so a rack can be matched to the room it sits in.
Modular racks, with vinyl storage on some
The Apollo and Evoque racks are modular, so you can put together a rack that suits the equipment you own and add to it later. Apollo Storm and Apollo Podium offer vinyl storage, and it is an option on the Elite Reference Series.
Why we stock Atacama
Atacama have taken What Hi-Fi?'s Best Hi-Fi Rack award in multiple years, which is not something that happens by accident in a category where most products look much the same. Support matters more than people expect: a good rack does for your electronics roughly what isolation feet do for a turntable.
