Atlas Mavros Toslink Glass Digital Optical Audio Cable
Atlas' ‘state of the art’ optical cable, engineered around a core of 280 strands of ultra-pure borosilicate glass and precision metal Toslink connectors. Designed to minimise ‘jitter’ (digital noise) the Mavros Optical is intended for ‘high-end’ audio systems where absolute sound quality is the primary consideration, for example between a hi-res media player and a DAC or digital-enabled amplifier.
Toslink (optical) connections have become increasingly popular with the rise of ‘dual purpose’ personal audio devices, many of which are also used as components in high quality home systems. A new generation of high quality streaming audio hardware means Toslink is no longer universally as viewed the‘ poor relation ’in digital interfaces. Basic ‘bundled’ Toslink cables suffer from a number of issues which degrade the performance of the system. Typically these issues include poor quality core conductor materials, poor matching of conductor to connectors and poor fit of connectors to equipment sockets. These flaws typically combine in very poor ‘jitter’ performance which gives a grainy, tonally bleached sound characteristic of poor quality digital audio.
The Mavros Glass Toslink cable is designed to specifically address these issues, using a reference standard ultra-pure borosilicate glass light-conducting core coupled with precision machined and micro-polished metal connectors to maximise efficient transfer. Extremely precise alignment and fit of the cable components and connectors ensure the cable is optimised for extremely low jitter, resulting in a very low level of noise and wide dynamic range.

The Atlas Toslink connector combines a die-cast metal plug with ABS Toslink connectors.
Borosilicate Glass Conductors
Borosilicate glass is widely used in laboratory, medical and solar panel applications, because of its strength and low co-efficient of thermal expansion. This makes possible very precise optical surfaces which change very little with temperature.
FEP Dielectric
PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) is cheap to produce and, as such, is the most commonly used insulation in AV cables. However, PVC is the worst quality insulation a Hi-Fi or AV signal can encounter as its high loss causes a significant reduction in signal velocity. PVC is better suited to power cables and should be avoided in Hi-Fi and AV signal cables.
Other dielectrics in common use are Polyethylene, Polypropylene and Polytetrafluoride Epoxy (better known as PTFE (Teflon™) or Teflon,) and the new and unique Atlas (PTFE).
FEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene) has a big advantage over PTFE in that it can be applied to sophisticated conductors at lower temperatures, preserving the integrity of the base material.
The table below shows the properties of a selection of dielectrics. Though not used as a dielectric in Atlas' cables, PVC is included for comparison purposes.

The plugs are Atlas designs too
Atlas designs its own RCA plugs. The Achromatic and Ultra RCAs are built for low mass and high bandwidth, and the newer Metik connectors were developed for personal audio. Designing the connectors in house means Atlas is not limited to what an outside supplier already sells.
Three performance levels, with named ranges in each
The catalogue is arranged in three performance levels. Upgrade covers Element and Equator, Aspire covers Hyper and Ailsa, and High End covers Mavros, Arran, Eos and Zeno. You can choose the level that suits the rest of your system, then move up later without changing brand.
Custom options and a repair service
Atlas lists luxe and speaker termination options, so you can specify a cable to suit the equipment at each end. It also repairs, customises and upgrades its cables through a dedicated service, which means you can bring an older cable up to date instead of replacing it.
Why we stock Atlas
Atlas run pure copper conductors through most of the range rather than silver or silver plating. That gives a warmer, more forgiving balance than the silver-plated cables we sell. The plugs are a bit tight to insert but this means they will stay put, unlike some cables I had before. The cable is also quiet flexible . You will not get a better optical cable unless spend just under £500.
Unless you have a very high end system this cable is all you will need.
The only thing which annoys me (hence my 4 stars only) is that I found the plugs to be difficult to lock in place in both my Sony and my (fabulous) Graham Slee Majestic DAC. Apart from that, it's probably the only optical cable I'll ever need, since it doesn't better my Atlas Opus coaxial interconnect in terms of fullness and density of the sound.
Still, it's an excellent buy.
Running from LG OLED smart tv to PS Audio Gain Cell DAC preamp. Clearer sound, more detail, enhances the regrettably low and constrained bandwidth of the television audio playback.
I bought 2 off x 2 meter lengths of Mavos and made a very careful comparison to my 3 meter Audioquesr Diamond Toslink on a world class sounding, very high resolution hi-end hi-fi system. You will not regret buying the Mavos toslink, unless you want the absolute best quality. Thanks Chris
