The planar magnetic revival
Planar magnetic drivers were a 1970s idea that had largely faded when Audeze started work in 2008. Instead of a cone driven at a single point, a planar uses a thin film with a conductive trace across its whole surface, driven evenly by magnets on both sides. The result is lower distortion and a flatter response, at the cost of weight and efficiency.
Audeze's contribution was making the manufacturing repeatable. Their Uniforce trace pattern and Fluxor magnet arrays are their own, and the diaphragms are thinner than a human hair.
The range runs from studio models through to the reference LCD series, and Audeze also make gaming and professional headphones using the same drivers.
Most Audeze models want a proper headphone amplifier, so it is worth checking your source can drive them before ordering.
