Dorpo

What dorpo are, and why a cable specialist stocks them

When OPPO Digital left the universal disc player market, they left a gap that nothing properly filled. Dorpo is the closest thing to a successor, founded by people who came out of OPPO's audio and video division and building the kind of product OPPO used to: a player that handles discs, files, streaming and hi-res audio in one box, built to a standard that justifies sitting in a serious system.

The hardware is made by Dongguan Benqing Electronic Technology, with UK and European operations run from Chippenham in Wiltshire. The range runs from the X3, a compact 8K player small enough to sit behind a screen, up through the UHP-3001 and UHP-3003SE universal players with internal drive bays, to the DMP-A1 music streamer, DAC, pre-amplifier and headphone amplifier.

What they share is a platform. Every model runs the same Amlogic S928X-K 8K processor and the same FunplayUI 2.0 interface, controlled either by the backlit remote or by dorpo's own dp SmartController app for iOS and Android. That consistency matters more than it sounds: the entry-level X3 navigates a library the same way the flagship does, so moving up the range changes the hardware around the experience rather than the experience itself.

The audio side is the part most media players skip. A standalone AKM DAC rather than processor audio, support for DSD512 and PCM up to 768kHz, and lossless Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD passthrough. Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and 8K at 60fps or 4K at 120fps cover the video side, along with Blu-ray ISO playback with full menu support, which is the feature disc-collectors ask about first.
