SPU
The classic heavyweight design in its own housing. Needs an arm with sufficient effective mass, so check before ordering.
SPU is one of the longest-running designs in audio, in continuous production in various forms since the late 1950s. The cartridge is built into its own housing rather than being mounted to a headshell, which is the source of both its character and its requirements.
That housing makes an SPU considerably heavier than a conventional cartridge, and it needs an arm with sufficient effective mass to work properly. Fitting one to a light modern arm will not work, and this is the single most common mistake made with the range.
The presentation is distinctive rather than neutral, and people who like SPUs tend to like them a great deal. It is a different proposition from the Cadenza or MC Series cartridges rather than a step above or below them.
