Ortofon SPU GTX E Moving Coil Hi-Fi Turntable Cartridge
The SPU GTX E has the musicality and tonal warmth that have made the SPU series a great choice for audiophiles while embracing cutting-edge advancements for superior performance.
Its elliptical stylus design, featuring a narrower front radius and broader side radius, ensures a larger contact area with record grooves. This translates to enhanced tracking ability and exceptional sound detail.
Engineered for pristine audio clarity, the SPU GTX E features a built-in MC step-up transformer, providing high-output, low-noise performance without requiring extra amplification. Whether you’re rediscovering classic records or exploring new favorites, this cartridge offers warmth, clarity, and precision in every note.
What Ortofon Say
Experience precise and detailed sound with the Ortofon SPU GTX E cartridge, which has been upgraded with an elliptical stylus. The elliptical stylus has a more complex shape, with a narrower front radius and a broader side radius.
The SPU GTX E combines the warmth of the classic SPU series with modern engineering to deliver exceptional audio clarity. The built-in MC step-up transformer ensures high-output, low-noise performance without the need for additional amplification.
Precision engineering and craftsmanship
SPU GTX cartridges are hand-built by experienced workers in Denmark. Their unibody housings are molded in one piece from a specially selected glass-fiber reinforced co-polymer, never before used for SPU cartridges. This ensures a form-factor stable, rigid, and low resonance housing for the fine generating system. The bottom cover is molded from the same new material, encapsulating the engine in a uniform material and design.
SPU GTX E shares the same general setup and construction as GTX S, but the configuration is upgraded with an elliptical diamond.
Built-in step-up transformer
The SPU GTX Series is designed to simplify your setup without compromising sound quality. When developing the GTX series, Ortofon chose to develop the new step-up transformers in collaboration with the company Lundahl Transformers. Thanks to the built-in step-up transformer, these cartridges connect directly to any phono stage or amplifier with the ease of a moving magnet cartridge – no extra equipment needed.

About Ortofon
Ortofon is one of the world leader's in the development and manufacturing of turntable cartridges. The wealth of knowledge and expertise at Ortofon has been accumulating since 1918 with their first moving coil cartridge manufactured in 1948. Today, Ortofon offers a wide range of cartridges for both DJ's and Hi-Fi audiophiles. Their offering includes moving magnets, moving coils, plug-and-play headshells, mono cartridges and 78RPM cartridges. Throughout their range of cartridges, Ortofon maintains a set profile with each cartridge profile containing an individual sonic expression. All of Ortofon's range of cartridges includes a Red, Blue, Bronze and Black model. First, in the range, are the Red cartridges which deliver open, dynamic sound with a slight touch of warmth. Next, the Blue Cartridges offer greater dynamic soundstages with improved detail and resolution. Following on, the Bronze cartridges improve the details in a way that pays respects to all elements of the track. Lastly, the Black cartridges are the best at everything. They are true to the groove with resolution and accurate insight into each recording. Ortofon have made their cartridges suitable for the majority of turntables on the market at the moment. With a wide range of available models, there is an Ortofon cartridge to suit everyone.

Colour names in the core ranges, numbers and names elsewhere
Ortofon's core ranges, 2M, MC Cadenza and MC Quintet, use colours to mark the steps, such as Red, Blue, Bronze and Black. Ortofon describes Red as open and dynamic with a touch of warmth, and Blue as adding detail and resolution. Other ranges use numbers, like MC X, or names, like Vertex and Verismo in the Exclusive series.
Moving magnet, moving coil and mono
Ortofon builds both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, so it covers the two main ways of generating a signal from a groove. It also makes mono and 78rpm cartridges for older records, and plug-and-play headshells, which arrive with the cartridge already mounted.
A series to suit most turntables
The catalogue is organised in series rather than a single line, and Ortofon says its cartridges suit the majority of turntables now on the market. You still need to check compatibility with your tonearm before buying, because a cartridge's weight and compliance have to suit it.
Why we stock Ortofon
Ortofon are the cartridge name most vinyl listeners already trust, and they cover the full span from a first serious upgrade to the high end. That range is why we carry them. Whether you are replacing a worn stylus or rebuilding a front end properly, you can be sent to one brand and be right.
