The connector standard other brands build to
Wolfgang B. Thörner founded WBT in Essen in 1985, dissatisfied with the RCA connectors then available. The company has worked on one question since: what happens at the joint between a cable and a component. Their connectors turn up on finished products across the industry, often unnamed.
nextgen is the clearest expression of the thinking. Conventional connectors are turned from brass, because pure copper is too soft to hold its shape, which puts a compromise metal in the signal path. Building the body from a plastic and metal composite let WBT use pure copper or fine silver for the conductor alone and strip out the surrounding mass that causes eddy currents.
The Circular Contact System, patented in 1991, clamps a conductor without solder or stripping. Since 2019 gold surfaces have been applied by PVD in a vacuum rather than electroplated, and the nextgen speaker connectors hold VDE certification, which is rare in this category.
