“I wasn’t trying to build a business. I was trying to understand why my TV looked terrible — and the answer changed everything.”

“I founded Future Shop with my wife, Zareen, in 2005. The idea came from a personal frustration. In 2004, we invested in one of the first Pioneer plasma TVs for our family. It was cutting-edge at the time, but when we set it up the performance was disappointing. The picture looked dull, the sound underwhelming, and the whole experience felt flat. That frustration led to something much bigger than I ever imagined.”

The Story

2004 — The Beginning
A brand new plasma TV. A deeply disappointing picture.

In 2004, Abdul bought a high-end Pioneer plasma TV and was deeply disappointed by the picture. Methodical investigation revealed the cables were the bottleneck. When he upgraded them, the difference was immediate — the picture he’d been promised was there all along.

“Once I replaced the connection with the right lead, the system was transformed with a sharper picture, fuller sound, and a genuinely cinematic experience at home.”

2004–2005 — The Idea
Honest information about cables was almost impossible to find.

Having solved the problem himself, Abdul realised that honest, accessible guidance on cables simply didn’t exist. Retailers sold cables but couldn’t explain which to buy or why. With £3,000 in savings, he set about building a business that would fill that gap — one based on expertise and honesty.

“There was a huge gap in knowledge. If I had struggled to get answers, I knew many others must have too.”

One website. One stock room. One very important first order.

Future Shop launched on 4 April 2005. Abdul handled everything himself — sourcing, customer emails, packing and posting. What made Future Shop different from day one was the approach: every customer query was answered with the same rigour he’d applied to his own problem. Word spread. Customers came back.

A brand new plasma TV. A deeply disappointing picture.

In 2004, we invested in one of the first Pioneer plasma TVs for our family. It was cutting-edge at the time, but when we set it up the performance was disappointing. The picture looked dull, the sound underwhelming, and the whole experience felt flat.

With my science background and natural curiosity, I started investigating. I discovered that the real issue wasn’t the TV at all, but the cabling. Once I replaced the connection with the right lead, the system was transformed with a sharper picture, fuller sound, and a genuinely cinematic experience at home.

What surprised me most was that no retailer could explain why this made such a difference. There was a huge gap in knowledge. If I had struggled to get answers, I knew many others must have too. That realisation was the spark that became Future Shop.

2004–2005 — The Idea

Honest information about cables was almost impossible to find.

What surprised me most was that no retailer could explain why this made such a difference. There was a huge gap in knowledge — information about cables and audio-visual performance was scattered, technical, and hard to access for the everyday consumer.

I saw an opportunity. My science background helps me explain in simple terms how materials, design, and construction impact performance — something I’ve been doing since day one. What sets Future Shop apart is independence and trust. We have no outside investors and no sales targets, so the advice we give is based purely on what’s right for the customer.

For me, Future Shop has always been about more than selling cables. It’s about helping people unlock the full potential of their systems and enjoy music, film, and television as they were meant to be experienced.

4 April 2005 — Launch Day

One website. One stock room. One very important first order.

We started small, using £4,000 of our savings to buy our first batch of cables and building a website in the evenings. On 4 April 2005, our very first order came through. It was a small step, but it changed our lives.

From those early days, the approach was always the same: understand what the customer is trying to achieve, ask the right questions, and give an honest recommendation. No commission. No upsell. Just genuine guidance.

Word spread. Customers came back. They told friends. What started as a small operation from home grew into something far larger — but always with the same values at its heart.

2025 — Twenty Years On

The business has grown. The values haven’t changed.

Nearly 20 years later, Future Shop has grown into the UK’s largest independent specialist in AV and Hi-Fi cables, trusted by more than 300,000 customers across 50+ countries. We’ve earned over 20,000 verified reviews with an average 4.9/5 rating.

But what hasn’t changed is the thing that started it all. Every customer is still treated the same way I approached my own problem — with curiosity, patience, and a commitment to finding the honest answer. The team still works without commission. Advice is still free. The first question is still always: “What are you trying to achieve?”

This is our story. Thank you for being part of it.
