The Gefen GF-HDK18G-VIP-RX is the receiver end of the Gen3 HDK18G-VIP system, and the distinction that matters is that it is not a point-to-point extender pretending to be a matrix. Each receiver sits on an ordinary gigabit network and can be pointed at any sender on that network by matching a channel ID, so two units behave like a simple extender, a rack of them behaves like a virtual matrix, and you can grow from one to the other without replacing anything. The system scales to 39,900 senders and more than 65,000 senders and receivers combined, bounded in practice only by network bandwidth and switch port count.

Video is the headline. The receiver outputs up to 4K 60Hz at full 4:4:4 chroma with HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, HDCP 2.3, 2.2 and 1.4, Deep Colour and lip-sync. An integrated scaler sits on the output, which matters more than it sounds on a large deployment, since it lets a mixed estate of displays each receive a resolution they can actually handle rather than forcing the whole system down to the lowest common denominator. Audio passes uncompressed LPCM up to 7.1 channels and up to 7.1 channels of high bit rate audio including Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and DTS-HD Master Audio. Content is distributed with AES-256 encryption.

The KVM side is properly implemented rather than token. Two USB 2.0 Type A ports on the rear take a keyboard, mouse or other peripherals, with USB Roaming so a single keyboard and mouse can control every PC on the network, and OSD hotkey switching so an operator can change source from the keyboard without touching the unit. Video, audio, RS-232, bi-directional IR and USB all route independently, so a receiver can be watching one source while its keyboard and mouse control another.

Audio is handled in both directions. A built-in de-embedder breaks two channels of analogue stereo out to the 3.5mm line output for headphones, powered speakers or a local amplifier. Separately, an optical input takes TOSLINK from the display itself and routes that audio back across the network to an amplifier at the source location, which is the feature that makes smart TV apps and broadcast tuners usable in a distributed system.

Practically, it is built to disappear. The enclosure is 231.5mm wide and only 25mm high, low profile enough to hide behind a display, and it is rack mountable using Gefen's optional 19-inch vertical stack rack. A two-port gigabit switch is built in, so a second device at the display can share the drop or units can be daisy chained. It conforms to 802.3at PoE and will run entirely from a PoE switch with no local power at all, drawing a maximum of 12W, though a 12V/3A locking supply is included for installations without PoE. Control is available through a built-in web interface, Telnet, UDP and an enhanced API for IP, RS-232, CEC and IR bridging, and firmware is field updatable either from the web server or in bulk through Gefen's GF-AVIP-MC Matrix Controller. MTBF is rated at 50,000 hours, and the unit carries a three year warranty.

Video, Audio, RS-232, 2-way IR, and USB can be routed independently between any Sender and Receiver unit, allowing end-users to control any of the sources and the displays within their network. Analog audio break-out de-embeds audio from the video and sends it to a separate audio system, enhancing the impact of presentations. Digital Optical Audio from a Display is able to distribute to any Source location with an AV Receiver.

• How It Works

The Gefen HDK18G-VIP system operates with two main components: a Sender unit (sold separately) and one or more Receiver units connected over a standard Gigabit Local Area Network. The Sender unit connects to your HDMI or USB-C source device, and the Receiver unit connects to your display. Using a network switch, the system extends signals up to 330 feet (100 meters). System Requirements

• A managed gigabit switch with Jumbo Frame Support (8k or greater) and IGMP Snooping enabled is required for LAN connection.
• A dedicated LAN is highly recommended.
