"Choosing a source for digital music
The source sets the ceiling for everything after it. In a streaming system that means the network implementation, the clock and the power supply inside the streamer matter more than the format of the file it is playing.
Decide where the DAC lives. A streamer with a built in DAC is one box and one power supply, which is simpler and usually cheaper. A transport only streamer feeds an external DAC, which costs more but lets you upgrade each part separately and often gives better isolation between the network and the conversion. Both approaches work, and the right answer usually depends on what you already own.
Check control and service support before sound quality. If the app is poor, or the streamer does not support the service you actually use, you will not enjoy it whatever it sounds like. Storage needs planning too: a NAS or dedicated music library keeps ripped files available to every room, and separating storage from playback usually gives a quieter result. Tell us which services you use and what you need to connect it to."
