Merlin Tarantula FE MK6 UK Mains Cable - End of Line

New for 2019, the Merlin Tarantula FE Mains Power Cable features an all-new construction aimed at minimising electromagnetic and radio frequency interference and delivering improved performance over previous versions.

The all new multi award winning Tarantula FE now benefits from Merlin's ECG (Energy Control Ground) system, designed to help reduce the build-up of Electrostatic energy in the system. By controlling and managing this energy you can drastically reduce the impact they have on performance.

The Award winning Tarantula MK6 offers amazing levels of performance for the money. Constructed using 3 x 2.5 mm twisted high purity oxygen free copper conductors to low resistance and give greater current handing. The conductors are coated with an extremely high grade Polyolefin which has a much better dielectric constant than the regular PVC used in on most mains cables. An Ali/Mylar screen with drain wire and then a CCS conductive carbon screen is employed to shield the cable which is then finished in flexible PVC outer.

The radiated and transmitted RF and Em Interference channelled into the equipment by regular mains cables tends to manifest itself as distortion of image or picture on AV equipment or loss of focus on audio so it is essential as much is removed as possible and at the same time lower the resistance of the circuit to increase dynamics. What makes Tarantula FE (filter edition) different to a standard model is the inclusion of our highest grade passive filters which drastically reduce interference that screening alone cannot remove and also minimising the leaked interference from your component power supply. Tarantula FE is how we like to see Tarantula! The standard model is engineered to hit a price point and represents outrageous value for money but where a little more refinement is preferred the FE will deliver! It is designed to bring extended dynamics and vibrancy to all components as well as improved clarity to both sound and images.

Very few cables at this price point offer much improvement at all, never mind to the standard of our new Tarantula. It is designed to bring extended dynamics and vibrancy to all components by lowering the noise floor. The new Tarantula represents the very best value for money for someone sceptical about mains cables and who just wants to sample a change for as little outlay as possible.

"Plug it into your hi-fi electronics and, compared with your standard kettle lead, the Tarantula produces a much cleaner, smoother sound. The lack of noise allows more detail to seep through into the sound-stage, with greater separation between instruments and vocals. But the benefits aren't just hi-fi based: plug the cable into a TV, and images appear crisper, while there's greater punch to the overall picture. It's not a spectacular difference, but we think it's a worthwhile improvement nonetheless."

What Hi-Fi Magazine November 2010

"The company’s MK6 version is a spectacular improvement. Plug it into hi-fi electronics and, compared with your standard kettle lead, the Tarantula helps your system produce a much cleaner, smoother sound. The lack of noise allows more detail to seep through into the soundstage, with greater separation between instruments and vocals. But the benefits aren’t just hi-fi based: plug the cable into a TV, and images appear crisper, while there’s greater punch to the overall picture."

About Merlin Cables

British-built custom cables, designed around one idea: take the noise out of the system.

Established in the early 2000s, Merlin Cables emerged with a singular mission: to deliver consistent, outstanding performance at an exceptional value. One conductor material, across the range

Every product under the Merlin Cables banner embodies this philosophy. They universally employ high-purity copper as the conductor material, ensuring that as one navigates up the range, the performance characteristics remain consistent, only elevating in quality at each tier.

Materials chosen to fight noise

In an age where ambient noise is omnipresent and often compromises system performance, Merlin Cables stand out. Their designs deftly integrate superior materials, from high-purity copper to cross-linked polymer dielectrics and even custom noise-reducing compounds intrinsic to the materials. This harmonious blend minimises the detrimental impact of external noise on any system.

Changes only when they earn their place

At Merlin, the pursuit of perfection is ceaseless. Despite receiving accolades and being hailed as best in class by independent reviewers, the drive to push the performance envelope remains unabated. However, change is never arbitrary. Modifications are only introduced when they offer tangible performance enhancements.

Why we stock Merlin

Merlin came onto our radar in 2010 when their power cable took a What Hi-Fi? award, and the results kept up with the price. Our engineers were trained by Merlin's founder to build the Tarantula and Black Widow power cables here in our workshop. They were also the only British brand we carried offering IEC, Figure 8, US, Euro and Australian terminations.

Tarantula fe, worth every penny 22 August 2020
What I noticed over the stock freebee cable i received with my Rega 3k amp...

Bass: Much more control, better timing, cleaner allowing the mid and top to shine, better sound picture, more extension and just generally more pleasant. Mid: Much cleaner with more detail and space
Top: More spacious, refined detail without sounding harsh at all and far better timing.

Conclusion: absolute no brainer and worth every penny!

REVIEW : Merlin Tarantula MK6 Mains Cable Schuko 10 May 2016
REVIEW : Merlin Tarantula MK6 Mains Cable Schuko - IEC 1m (NEW)

First of all, if you want that sound you heard from your HiFi dealer but you think it’s inaccessible at home, then think again, it is entirely possible to get that experience in your home if you buy the appropriate cabling for your system AND ALSO BUY an appropriate mains current cleaner (an absolute essential to give your system the sound you seek as well as it stopping your system’s amp/CD-player components being put under constant strain trying to deal with spikey, dirty mains signal current). Moreover, and this is one of the principle reasons I originally pursued my speaker/interco-nnect RSA cable enquiries and eventually bought my cables from FutureShop - they will ‘burn-in’ certain cables free-of-charge and that is a real plus – your cables properly electrically conditioned before you use them – the Nordost burning is evident immediately in the developed sound when you first use them – you won’t get that anywhere else for FREE. Another reason I pursued my purchase in Futureshop was the assistance offered from Adam (senior) in FutureShop - top-notch : friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and honest – not trying to make you take something you don’t want or need but rather fulfill your requirements in a very agreable manner (there’s also no hifi-snobbery present which is rather welcoming in itself). No question/enquir-y is brushed off as being unimportant, no matter how small. The service is fast btw – sent to France faster than I’ve ever had anything sent from the UK before. I sound like an advert but why the heck not ? When service and goods are this good it should be lauded

To the review of the Merlin Tarantula MK6 Mains Cable Schuko - IEC 1m (NEW) :

Awaiting my new top of the Focal Aria 900 range (948s) floor standers I feel it is interesting to review the various cables I purchased from FutureShop on a sound system where my expections are limited and where the Arias won’t give a musical reproduction that shows the various cables in a better light than necessary, so on a most basic system, the cables are showing the stuff they are made of. I will offer a brief review after the burn in period of 100 hrs for my new speakers at a later point. My entry level system (detailed below) has already got a really great power hub for the price and some rather good cabling from FutureShop (The Copper-line Alpha Schuko Power-HUB 4 Way, QED XT40 Speaker Cable and Atlas Equator MKIII Integra 2 RCA to 2 RCA Audio Cables)… so, when linking the power mains cleaner hub to the CD player and amp with the new Merlin Tarantula MK6 Mains Cables, I’m just hoping really (after all the rather impressive improvements to sound stage size, detail and dynamism so far) that I might get a little more detail. So, I put my first test album on, ‘Rubber Soul’ by the Beatles Japanese SHM remaster – I didn’t even get to sit down when the sound exploded from the speakers. Paul McCartney delivering ‘Daytripper’ with energy and action against a tight sounding, much more detailed background with much greater bass, energy. It’s unbelievable, mad even – WOW! I was transfixed and pleasantly in shock – wasn’t expecting that at all – I had been somewhat sceptical about mains cables making any difference tbh but trusted Adam(senior) on this and went with it. Moved on to ‘Girl’ and John Lennon’s voice was fully expressive and engaging, air between the singer, the drums, bass, instruments that is very welcome – incredible improvements on such an entry level system with such generic speakers. Listened to ‘In My Life’ – my favourite Beatle song but I always felt the Beatles had somehow screwed up in their musicality (a thought I couldn’t really comprehend since that was not something they ever did but the harmonies always hurt even on expensive systems sounding harsh and always detracting/clas-hing with the principle melody from Lennon’s voice)… I was wrong, the Beatles got it exquisitely spot on I’m very glad to say - the mains cable allowed the melodic beauty of the harmonies to reveal itself and fall gracefully into place in the song for the first time ever. Wow !

Musical imaging – Planxty’ ‘Well below the valley’ – a somewhat sinister song with a rueful mantraesque bodhran beat – sounded small and clumpy till the mains cable presented the CD player and amp with a nice clean signal from the mains current cleaner – the music now presented as it would be on much better systems

Sound stage : Listened to Robbie Robertson’s ’Native Americans’ and the solidity in the sound stage is impressive ; the detail is required to make sense of this album – the harmonies no longer sound like Daleks drowning but now sound like Native Americans in the distance – mad change in the sound quality. I listened to all these tracks just prior to listening to them again for the test. The Cocteau Twins ‘Treasure’ album suddenly sounds powerful and impressive – this album can just sound a bit silly without a big sound stage but here Elisabeth Fraser is singing. Impressive detailed sound stage that wasn’t there before

Detail : Listened to Lloyd Cole’s’Perfect skin’ – the remastered Deluxe edition – not well remastered and not at all enjoyable till now. The guitar riff is now distinct and drives the song; the vocals, drums, bass and instruments are all separate with their own space and the song has come to life – the vinyl album was wonderful, the engineers need to go back and get it closer to that sound but at least it is engaging now. Big test on musical detail is with Supertramp’s ‘Give a little bit’ – this song can sound busy and the vocal can get meshed in with the rhythm guitar – the guitar gives the song its power. Brilliant – the guitar sounds like a guitar and I heard another rhythm guitar I didn’t even know was there. The vocals are separated from the guitar and drums and bass – mad improvement

CONCLUSION : the speakers are now doing things they never thouight they could do. The sound is tight, controlled, big ; vocals have air between them and the instruments; the bass is smart, full and has a kick. The question is of course, why are people not using mains cables on cleaned-up electricity supplies ? No room for sceptics now – buy a mains cable of this quality or better depending on your system – it’s a must or ask yourself why not ? The price is not out of this world but the improvements truly are. I will always have a mains conditioner power hub of appropriate quality (NOT the cheapest) and always have appropriate mains cables linking the power hub to the national grid, and appropriate mains cables linking the CD player and Amp to the power hub itself. The cables did show the stuff they are made of – such stuff dreams are made on. It really is a stunning upgrade for the money. No longer a sceptic am I.

I was doubtful to say the least, and worried the cost would not be justified, but curiosity got too much to bear. I'm glad it did. When used to connect my Arcam AVR380 tangible improvements are much in evidence with both sound and picture quality. I now consider it a bargain and an essential addition in bringing out the full potential of my system.
