What Node say about SS-1 Core Module

Support System 1, or ‘SS-1’ continue the British brand NODE Audio’s appetite for product innovation, and are the culmination of extensive research to develop themost effective upgrade to your existing system, enhancing timing, clarity and musicality. More than just isolation, each SS-1 ‘puck’ contains a combination of Stainless Steel, ceramics and polymers, working in unison to limit, control and capture micro-vibrations and stray magnetic fields from electronic equipment like transformers, power conditioners, connection blocks, power supplies, streamers, DACs, and amplifiers.

Material Composition

  • Glass Nylon (3D Printed): Dampens high frequencies and reduces static, aided by carbon black in the material to absorb some static—this detail is generally kept proprietary
  • Ceramic Stack: Uniquely arranged to isolate vibrations effectively and control sound quality
  • Steel Top Plate: Contains a precise amount of ferrous material to manage magnetic fields, shielding sensitive components from interference without being fully magnetic itself

Threading System

Offers integration options with various setups, including carpet spikes and threaded inserts, making it compatible with multiple components.

Wide Applicability

Effective under both moving parts (like turntables and CD players) and solid-state electronics (such as preamps and power distribution blocks), making it a versatile enhancement for most audio setups.

About Node Audio

Node Audio was founded in 2018. The manufacturer is the vision of two industrial designers Ashley May and David Evans who believed there was a better way to reproduce sound than a traditional box-like loudspeaker. Based in Cambridge, the spiritual home of British HiFi, Node is a hub for audio research and innovation, challenging the current state-of-the-art in the pursuit of absolute musical purity. Nodes products are the distillation of these innovations as stunning acoustic sculptures, which convey distinctly human feel. They are an investment in emotional enjoyment for many years to come. Node’s approach to product innovation isn’t shackled by traditional acoustic designs and manufacturing techniques. Node pursue elegant audio designs and principals where sound and form coalesce to create beautiful, timeless sonic products.

About Node Audio

Cambridge-area maker of modular isolation supports, machined from stainless steel with a ceramic core.

Node Audio is based near Cambridge, England, in a shared advanced manufacturing facility. FutureShop lists its SS-1 isolation system, a modular support that works as a footer under a component. With adaptors, the same parts can be used as a cable riser or a speaker support, so one system covers several jobs.

The SS-1 is a modular support

The SS-1 Core Module is the basic unit. Adaptors let you use it with a spider rack, under a loudspeaker with spikes, or as a riser for speaker and power cables. You choose the pieces you need, so you can start with one component.

Materials are machined steel, nylon and ceramic

The SS-1 combines machined stainless steel, laser-sintered glass nylon and a ceramic core, with a steel gimbal on top. It uses no elastomer damping. Node says the design isolates equipment from its support, drains vibration and focuses stray magnetic fields.

Node also makes loudspeakers

Node's own loudspeakers, such as the Hylixa, have cabinets made of laser-sintered glass nylon, built in-house. The loudspeakers are separate from the SS-1 isolation range that FutureShop lists, but the same materials knowledge sits behind both products.

Why we stock Node Audio

Isolation is the most system-dependent thing we sell. What transforms one setup does nothing in another, which is why we carry more than one approach to it. Node sit at the high end with their own engineering, and they are the alternative we reach for when a customer has tried something else and heard nothing.

Central to maximizing performance 25 May 2025
It was Mark who recommended I give the Node SS1 footers a go. He knew that I love a good tweak, had bought dozens of Entreq Magma blocks from Futureshop, had loved what they did for my system and was lamenting that they were no longer in production. Mark promised a radical improvement in SQ over the Magmas so I dipped a toe by purchasing six feet, intending to use them to float two components in my system. The cost was significant so I had real second thoughts, especially since I had originally ear-marked spending money on a speaker cable upgrade. My attitude was that I would almost be relieved if I was straining to find improvements over the already superb Entreq blocks, since I could send back the SS-1s and buy some Tellurium cables instead. A surely far more sensible outlay.

Well, I'm glad I bought the SS-1 feet and they aren't going back. In fact, I'm buying more. They represent far more than a tweak. More like a revelation.

They manage the neat trick of adding both definition and body to every note of music coming through your system. Normally, in Hi-Fi, there is a trade-off between gaining either definition / air / presence / clarity / speed or gaining richness / warmth / humanity / decay / extension. Not with the Node SS-1 feet. From a more punchy yet pungent bass to a gloriously palpable and human mid-range to a cleaner yet effortlessly extended treble, my system gained energy, presence and expression right across the frequency range and regardless of where I placed them underneath my gear.

I did find preferences in placement. I was told to expect the greatest benefits under source components, and I found great benefits using the Nodes under my streaming and CD transports. Yet better still were the improvements using them under my DAC and Pre-Amp, both of which are tube-based. A ridiculous degree of extra humanity and emotion came from using them there; genuine goose-bump moments. I also tried them under my Isotek Titan and got improvements in expression almost as great. Putting two under my six-way distribution block turned out to be an especially good and more cost-effective way of improving the sound. I was initially and relatively disappointed in trying them under my bookshelf speakers. They were better than my existing Entreq Magmas there but the improvement was small and not worth the large extra outlay. Or so I thought at the time...

After a week with the Nodes, I decided to buy two more to leave under my distribution block, so I could leave a set of three under my DAC and Pre, which seemed the optimum locations. When I ordered two more from Steve, I mentioned how they had done comparatively little under my speakers. Steve pointed out that separate spikes exist from Node to better couple the SS-1s to speakers. So when the two extra SS-1s arrived earlier today, I put them under my distribution block then took the two sets out from under my DAC and Pre then experimented by putting them back under my speakers, only this time with high-precision ball-bearings (from another DIY Hi-Fi project ) sitting in the screw hole in the top plate of each feet to provide a minimum contact point with the undersides of the speakers. The effect was dramatic. All of the wonderful effects I've mentioned above were audible again but now coming from being used under my speakers. There also seemed an added degree of raw detail and timbral variation. I tried the SS-1 + ball-bearing trick back under my DAC and Pre and got the same results. My system was singing.

I thought my system sounded amazing with the Entreq Magma feet but putting the Magmas back in place of the Node SS-1 made everything sound dull and flat. And it's not like all that extra energy and emphasis which comes from using these Nodes makes the sound fatiguing. More like thrilling.

If you are running out of ways to improve your core system or want to really see what your present system can do, I can't recommend the Node SS-1s enough. Just be ready to feel you have to spend big to put them everywhere because that's what I'm now facing up to doing. Every extra set just makes the system sound better and better, with no apparent sense of diminishing returns. Another way in which the SS-1s seem to defy established audio conventions.

Guess the Tellurium cable upgrade will just have to wait.
Response from Future Shop
Thank you for your extensive review. Your outcome is as we hope and expect from our original design brief.

As you have noted, the effects are accumulative and release the music from the system.

If we can offer a couple of points that may help bring even more from the system. The design requires the close coupling of the top SS-1 plate with the surface of the component that sits on it. If you place the ball bearings on the top, you are reducing the potential for the management of stray fields in the equipment. May we suggest that if the sound is better using the steel ball, then perhaps the original position (sans steel ball) was not quite optimal and further trials may bring about increasing sonic gain.

We would strongly recommend trying a set of the speaker spike inserts to couple the speakers fully with the SS-1 base component. Only then will the full potential be realised. It is also possible to replace your spikes with threaded studs and directly couple the units to the SS-1

During the development period, we were taken by surprise at the massive improvement brought about by the use of the power cable lifters and speaker cable risers. Obviously, an improvement was expected based on our design decisions. Once again, the SS-1 system is more than a decoupling device like so many alternatives. Attention to detail and experimentation pays dividends.

If we can offer any further assistance, feel free to reach out.
