Ortofon 2MR Red Hi-Fi Turntable Cartridge

The new 2MR range of cartridges boasts all the features of the standard 2M range, but with a reduced ride height, making it compatible with popular tonearms and turntables that require a lower-profile cartridge.

Not only does the 2MR provide improved compatibility, but it also offers exceptional performance. The Ortofon brand is well-known for its superior quality and precision engineering, making the 2MR a top choice for professionals. The reduced ride height of this cartridge allows for a more stable and accurate tracking, resulting in a clearer and more dynamic sound.

Another reason to invest in the 2MR is its versatility. It comes in different versions to suit various applications. The 2MR offers a reduced cartridge height specifically designed for tonearms that require a lower ride height. This level of customisation is essential for professionals who work with a variety of equipment.

Furthermore, Ortofon is constantly evolving and improving their products, and the new 2MR is a testament to that.  Its reduced ride height, exceptional performance, and versatility make it a top choice in the industry. Don't settle for less, invest in the 2MR and elevate your audio experience to a professional level.

The story behind the 2M series

The 2M Series was developed in conjunction with the Danish designer Moeller Jensen Design. Inspired by the facets of a diamond, whose contours gracefully trace the grooves on a record’s surface, the 2M’s handsome elegance establishes a great combination of form and functionality. Of course, the 2M isn’t just another pretty face. It has been engineered to the highest standards and is congruent with Ortofon’s unrelenting commitment to providing the most precise and accurate reproduction possible without colouration.

The name “2M” was chosen as it represents the abbreviation for moving magnet, MM.

The four-model 2M line was originally introduced in 2008, and since then the range has been extended to include True-mono models 2M MONO and 78. Also available are models with expanded mounting options, such as Verso for bottom mount headshells and PnP for direct mounting on arms with universal mount.

Styli interchangeability

2M Series styli are engineered for a tight fit to minimize coupled vibrations, thereby improving sound reproduction. Physically 2M styli will fit on alternative 2M cartridges bodies, but 2M Series cartridges’ engines, coils and magnets configurations are not quite identical: Red and Blue are identical, so are the Bronze and Black and so are the true mono variants 2M Mono and 2M 78.

Styli lifetime and care

With proper care, Ortofon finds that up to 1,000 hours is possible without degradation of performance. The stylus does begin to exhibit changes after 1,000 hours, but the stylus life as a whole is expected to top 2,000 hours. Proper care is comprised of the following:

  • Cleaning of record by means of fibre brush before and after every use
  • Cleaning of record by using a record cleaning machine once in a while
  • Cleaning of the stylus by means of a fine antistatic brush. Please remember to remove dust from the diamond tip before and after playback of each record. Use the brush in the forward direction from the rear of the cartridge towards the stylus tip, never from stylus tip to the rear of the cartridge and never from side to side
  • Proper adjustment of alignment, anti-skating, azimuth and tracking force
  • Ortofon does not recommend the use of solvents of any kind for cleaning of either record surface or stylus.

Hi-Fi Choice XT40 Review

"Ortofon cartridges are very informative...well extended at both frequency extremes...this one seems to fit the pattern."

Hi-Fi Choice - May 2011

"Resolution from this cartridge is more than competent, and the sense of space and inflection on the world-weary I've Been To Town from Sinatra's A Man Alone sits well here.

Like closely priced rivals, the 2M Red tracks at 1.8g, and we found it simple to fit and align, with its combination of a large, solidly built casing and captive nuts easy to manage"

What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision - April 2010

"Its design is striking and evidently influenced by the facetting of gemstones, appropriately enough...

...It’s worth experimenting, because at best this is one of the most detailed cartridges we've come across at this kind of price."

Tech Radar - April 2011

"...had a pleasing ambience...intimate, trembling quality.
Bass was in proportion...good detail...
...realistic without going into hardness.
...sense of space was still there even in the climaxes."
