Upgrading or replacing a headphone cable
There are two reasons to buy a headphone cable: the original has failed, or the system has outgrown it. Detachable cables are the most common point of failure on any headphone, and a replacement is usually cheaper and quicker than a repair.
Get the headphone end right first. Manufacturers use different connectors, and a cable that fits a Sennheiser will not fit an Audeze or a Focal. Check both the connector type and, on dual entry designs, whether you need one cable or two. The amplifier end is simpler: 3.5mm for portable use, 6.35mm quarter inch for most desktop amplifiers, and 2.5mm or 4.4mm Pentaconn for balanced outputs.
A balanced cable only helps where the amplifier has a balanced output. Where it does, expect more available power and often a lower noise floor rather than a change in tonal character. Tell us the headphones and the amplifier or player you are using and we will confirm which connector you need before you order.
