Astell&Kern PD20 Digital Audio Player

The PD20 Digital Audio Player represents a new direction for Astell&Kern, built from the ground up to deliver a highly personalised listening experience. Rather than simply refining an existing design, the PD20 introduces a platform focused on shaping sound around the listener. Through Personal Sound technology, developed with Audiodo, the player performs a hearing analysis and creates a profile tailored specifically to your ears. Combined with the tactile Sound Master Wheel, which allows 160-step control of bass, midrange and treble adjustments, the PD20 gives you precise control over how your music is presented.

At the core of the PD20 is a Quad-DAC configuration using four ESS ES9027PRO DACs, designed to minimise channel interference and reveal fine sonic detail with exceptional clarity. Astell&Kern’s TERATON ALPHA audio solution further enhances performance through advanced power noise reduction and a precisely engineered analogue output stage. The player also incorporates ESA (Enhanced Signal Alignment) technology to minimise group delay, improving timing accuracy and delivering a cleaner, more coherent sound across the entire frequency spectrum.

The PD20 also features a flexible Triple AMP architecture with selectable Class A, Class AB and Hybrid modes, allowing you to choose between rich analogue warmth, efficient dynamic balance, or a blend of both. Adjustable Class A current settings further refine amplifier behaviour depending on your headphones or IEMs. With support for native DSD512 and PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz, advanced DAR upsampling, Bluetooth streaming, and a large 6-inch display, the PD20 offers a powerful and highly customisable portable listening experience designed to bring you closer to the original recording.

Here is what Astell&Kern say about the PD20

Finding the sound that truly suits you is the first step toward the essence of music. PD20 is designed to guide you on that journey. Our first step in this journey was to start from the very beginning. Rather than creating a successor to the PD10, we created an entirely new audio device that will redefine your musical experience.

Through Personal Sound, you can create a sound signature tailored to your hearing, then precisely refine it to your taste using the Sound Master Wheel. An intuitive control that allows even the amplifier driving mode to be changed with a single touch. Now, music is not just something you listen to. It is something you shape.

Exceptional resolution and high-purity sound, ES9027PRO Quad-DAC

Designed with a singular focus on sound quality, PD20 adopts the ESS ES9027PRO DAC in a Quad-DAC configuration. Four DACs operate independently to minimize inter-channel interference and deliver precise signal separation. As a result, even the finest nuances in sound are revealed with greater clarity, creating a natural, analog-like presentation through clean, distortion-free layering.

Minimizing Group Delay with Proprietary ESA (Enhanced Signal Alignment) Technology

Through its in-house developed ESA (Enhanced Signal Alignment) technology, PD20 significantly improves one of the fundamental challenges in audio reproduction—group delay. ESA precisely aligns frequency signals so they arrive more uniformly, minimizing frequency distortion and enhancing clarity and cleanliness of sound.

*What is Group Delay? Group delay refers to the difference in time it takes for each frequency to pass through an internal audio system. In simple terms, it describes a phenomenon where different frequencies within an audio signal do not arrive simultaneously, resulting in slight timing delays across frequencies.

TERATON ALPHA

To create the ultimate DAP unlike anything experienced before, we went beyond simply adopting the latest DACs and new specifications. We further evolved and applied TERATON ALPHA, Astell&Kern’s Ultimate Sound Solution, incorporating its advanced and innovative audio technologies.

Refined through continuous research, TERATON ALPHA represents Astell&Kern’s integrated audio engineering expertise. Through effective power noise reduction, efficient power consumption with stable amplification, and a precisely engineered audio output interface, it delivers sound that remains faithful to the original source.

Triple AMP Architecture

PD20 features three distinct amplifier classes, allowing you to directly choose both sonic character and driving performance.

  • Class A mode delivers rich, high-density sound with minimal signal distortion, expressing a smooth, analog-like texture.
  • Class AB mode offers excellent balance and efficiency, providing stable dynamics and articulate detail.
  • Hybrid mode combines the refined texture of Class A with the efficiency and power of Class AB, creating a new level of sonic balance.

Switching between amplifier classes is achieved through a physical slide key rather than a software menu, enabling intuitive, immediate control based on your listening situation. Choose the amplifier class that best matches your music and listening environment.

Adjustable Class-A Current

In Class A and Hybrid modes, the amplifier current can be adjusted in three levels: High / Mid / Low. AMP Current adjustment goes beyond simple output control. It precisely fine-tunes the energy density and driving behavior of the amplifier, allowing you to further refine sound quality according to the characteristics of your earphones or headphones.

  • High: Maximizes power delivery to create a wide soundstage and explosive dynamics. Even high-impedance headphones are driven with unwavering authority and a spacious, stable presentation.
  • Mid: Provides an optimal balance between sound density and resolution. It preserves vocal texture while delivering a well-balanced sound that remains comfortable even during extended listening sessions.
  • Low: Employs delicate, precise current control to suppress background noise and enhance sonic purity. Ideal for high-sensitivity IEMs, revealing even the finest nuances and micro-details.

A One-of-a-Kind Sound Tuned to Your Hearing

PD20 delivers optimal sound tailored to your individual hearing. Developed in collaboration with global audio solution leader Audiodo, Personal Sound is used in a DAP for the first time, creating a personalized profile exclusively for you and redefining how you experience sound.

By precisely analyzing your hearing characteristics and independently compensating for left and right ears, it dramatically enhances clarity and balance. Regardless of genre, volume level, or the headphones or IEMs you use, you can enjoy a consistently optimized listening experience.

With a simple hearing test, your personal listening experience is complete.

* Dedicated earphones are included for accurate hearing measurement.
* Personal Sound supports audio playback up to 32bit / 192kHz.

Audiodo Audiosphere: Immersive Spatial Sound from Any Stereo Source

Audiosphere goes beyond conventional stereo, delivering a powerful sense of spatial immersion. It expands two-channel audio into a virtual three-dimensional sound field and offers four presets: Subtle, Balanced, Immersive, and Echoic.

From the expansive resonance of orchestral performances to the realism of video content, you can select the sound atmosphere that best suits your listening preference.

* Audiosphere supports audio playback up to 32bit / 96kHz.

Audiodo Equalizer: Effortless, Intuitive EQ Control

Audiodo’s Equalizer offers intuitive control centered on Bass, Mid, and Treble. Working in harmony with the Personal Sound profile, it operates on an already corrected sound foundation, ensuring stable and consistent performance.

With the Tilting function, you can naturally adjust the overall tonal balance toward either the low or high frequencies, while preserving the original sound character.

* Equalizer supports audio playback up to 32bit / 192kHz.

Sound Master Wheel, Crafting Your Own Sound in 160 Steps

The Sound Master Wheel, a key design element of the PD20, is seamlessly integrated with the Audiodo equalizer. Each band—Bass, Mid, and Treble—can be finely adjusted across 160 steps, from –8.0 dB to +8.0 dB, allowing even the most subtle preferences to be precisely reflected in your sound./p>

Without interrupting your music, you can shape and refine the sound purely through the tactile feel of the wheel.

Bringing You Closer to the Original Sound, Advanced Digital Audio Remaster

Advanced DAR is a second-generation DAR technology designed to deliver a more natural and refined sound. Rather than sending the audio signal directly to the DAR engine, the signal first passes through VSE (Virtual Sound Extender), where lost harmonics are virtually restored to enhance sound quality.

After this initial enhancement, DAR processing is applied in a second stage to achieve more complete and sophisticated upsampling. Through this process, listeners can experience a deeper, more immersive sound that remains faithful to the original recording.

Sound Design Shaped by DAC Filters

With six DAC filter options, users can choose their preferred sound character. From natural tones to dynamic sound, you can fine-tune and create your own unique sound to match your taste and music genre.

Design

The design concept of the PD20 is “Sound Lab Control.” It offers an experience akin to working with professional studio equipment—directly shaping, adjusting, and perfecting sound with precision.

The two wheels positioned on the top each serve a distinct purpose: one for sound tuning, the other for volume control. Their symmetrical layout ensures intuitive operation, while the low-profile protectors surrounding the wheels provide both protection and a sense of openness.

Top-mounted graphics and LED lighting allow you to instantly confirm the current mode without looking at the screen. The AMP and CURRENT slide switches, along with the lock button, are individually positioned to clearly define their functions, while the multifunction key is placed where the thumb naturally rests, enhancing overall usability.

A linear, refined body combined with structurally aligned control elements. The clean design identity pursued by the PD line reaches its fullest expression in the PD20.

About Astell&Kern

Astell&Kern is the ultimate digital music source that brings you Mastering Quality Sound or MQS. Astell means ‘Stars’ in Latin and Kern means ‘Center’ in German. We believe Astell&Kern is the center of music.

Today, original music performances can be captured in digital almost exactly as they were performed due to new, advanced recording technology currently available. However, these high quality recordings are mainly listened to through inferior sound formats, such as MP3 or through streaming services. With the debut of the MP3 format, music lovers sacrificed sound quality for the convenience of being able to carry their music collection wherever they went. Because the MP3 format heavily compresses files for the sake of convenience, the vocals and instruments you hear are only an inferior version of the original. The soundstage and the ambience of the original performance often disappears when listening to compressed MP3 music. After pondering these issues, Astell&Kern was our solution to poor sound quality for the sake of portability, and our way in reviving the original sound quality of music, MQS, for music artists, recording engineers, and professionals.

Astell&Kern's pursuit is to provide natural and original sound without distortion. It showcases the presence of the original recording with miniscule details you may not have noticed from other music systems, while playing back high-resolution music bit by bit, exactly as it was recorded. The ability to play back the exact recording of any live performance is what Astell&Kern is known for.

The power of true sound from Astell&Kern can now be experienced and has been part of many famous audio exhibitions around the world. Astell&Kern is now admired by music lovers from many countries, including the USA, China, Japan, UK, France, and many more around the world.

Why we stock Astell&Kern

We had DACs but nothing portable, so we went looking. Astell&Kern do one thing and have done it longer than almost anyone, with a range that runs from a first serious player up to real money. If you have invested in in-ear monitors and are still feeding them from a phone, this is the gap they fill.

A high-quality hi-fi system is built around a few core elements working together. At its heart is a source, such as a streamer, turntable, CD player, or digital audio player, which provides the music. This signal is then shaped and boosted by amplification, which may include an integrated amplifier, headphone amplifier, or phono stage depending on the system. The sound is delivered through speakers or headphones, which have a major influence on the overall character of what you hear. Supporting components also play an important role. DACs improve digital playback quality, cartridges and phono stages are vital for vinyl, and hi-fi racks, speaker stands, and isolation products help equipment perform consistently. A balanced system does not rely on one standout component, but on how well everything works together.

Isolation and support products can make a clearly audible difference, especially in resolving systems. Vibrations from floors, speakers, and even airborne sound can interfere with sensitive components like turntables, DACs, and amplifiers. Proper speaker stands help speakers perform as intended by improving stability, positioning, and bass control. Hi-fi racks and isolation platforms reduce unwanted resonance, helping systems sound cleaner, more focused, and more consistent. While these products may not change the sound as dramatically as speakers or cartridges, they often unlock performance that is already there but being masked by vibration or poor placement.

That depends on the starting point of the system. If the fundamentals are weak, such as entry-level speakers, poor setup, or missing core components, starting with the basics usually brings the biggest gains. A well-matched foundation allows later upgrades to shine. If the system is already balanced, upgrading individual components can be very effective. Improvements such as a better cartridge, DAC, phono stage, or isolation can refine detail, clarity, and realism. The most rewarding upgrades tend to be those that address the system’s weakest link rather than focusing on one category alone.

In many systems, the biggest improvement comes from upgrading speakers or headphones, as these shape the sound more than any other component. For vinyl systems, the cartridge and phono stage are often the most influential upgrades. In digital systems, a higher-quality DAC or streamer can significantly improve clarity and timing. Beyond electronics, addressing setup, isolation, and support is often overlooked but highly effective. Improving speaker positioning, adding proper stands, or isolating sensitive equipment can deliver noticeable gains without changing core components. The best first upgrade is usually the one that removes the most obvious limitation in the current system.

There are lots of components and tweaks that can offer a lift in performance, however, our current favourite is the UK 13A mains fuse from your wall socket to your distribution block or amplifier. This is an often overlooked component in most systems but the improvements far outweigh it's size and cost.
