The company that kept building turntables
When Heinz Lichtenegger started Pro-Ject in 1991, the turntable market was collapsing. Vinyl was finished as a mainstream format and most manufacturers had left. He went the other way, taking on a former Tesla turntable factory in Litovel in the Czech Republic and keeping its staff and tooling in work. Pro-Ject still build there.
The Debut arrived in 1999 and has sold in the hundreds of thousands since, which makes it one of the most widely owned turntables ever made. Above it the range climbs through heavier plinths and better bearings to reference decks with carbon and magnesium tonearms. Design is done in Austria, manufacturing across Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Alongside turntables, Pro-Ject build phono stages, amplifiers, DACs, streaming sources and record cleaning equipment, which makes them one of the few places a complete analogue system can come from a single manufacturer.
Most models arrive largely assembled and set up, which removes the usual barrier for a first turntable.
