Hana EH MkII High Output MC Cartridge
The Hana EH MK II is a high-output moving coil cartridge. At 2mV it plugs straight into the moving magnet input that most phono stages and integrated amplifiers already have, so you can move to a moving coil design without adding a step-up transformer or a dedicated MC stage.
The MK II update brings the brass cap from Hana's M Series to the E Series. It adds mass to the body to control vibration, and because the cap is threaded you can bolt the cartridge to the headshell without fiddling with loose nuts, which makes alignment noticeably easier. The generator parts and output pins are cryogenically treated, the elliptical stylus sits on an aluminium cantilever, and the Alnico magnet that gives the E Series its musical character is retained.
Tracking force is 2g and the suggested load is over 47k ohms, a standard MM setting. If your phono stage has a proper moving coil input and you would rather use it, the EL MK II is the low-output version of the same cartridge.
Here is what Hana says about the EH MK II
Excel Sound, the manufacturer behind Hana cartridges, expanded their line with the M Series and flagship Umami models, pushing the boundaries of analog performance through the integration of classic Japanese craftsmanship, modern materials, and advanced engineering. The S Series MKII was the first to incorporate many of these innovations, now featured in the E Series MK II.
The "E" stands for elliptical, referencing the diamond stylus profile featured in the E series. Retaining the classic Alnico magnet that contributes to Hana's rich musicality, the MK II versions incorporate numerous refinements for superior sonic performance. From the M Series, the updated body design with its brass cap, adds mass for improved vibration control while providing threaded mounting for easier tonearm installation. Shared with the Umami Series and entire Hana range, critical generator components and output pins are cryogenically treated to enhance conductivity and signal purity.
The updated coil winding design with 8-ohm impedance, first developed for the ML and incorporated in the SL MKII models, is now featured in the EL MK II, creating a more ideal interface with moving coil phono stages. Echoing the entire Hana range, the E Series MK II body is finished with an elastomeric coating, enhancing resonance control while elevating its appearance.
Founded in 1970 by Masao Okada-san, Japan's Excel Sound is one of the world's premier phono cartridge design and manufacturing companies. Based in Yokohama, its skilled artisans handcraft every model, from the flagship Umami Black to the new E Series MK II. By combining the essential musicality of the original E Series with proven advancements drawn from both the M Series and Umami models, the new E Series MK II embodies Hana's next chapter of Evolutionary Brilliance.

About Hana
Handmade moving coil cartridges from Japan, offered in a ladder of stylus and output options.
Hana cartridges are made by Excel Sound Corporation in Tokyo, and are handmade in Japan. The range covers both high and low output moving coil designs, so you can match one to a moving magnet or a moving coil phono stage. Models are organised in tiers, with the stylus shape and the cantilever material changing as you move up.
Read more about HanaShow less
The tiers are defined by stylus shape
The E models use an elliptical stylus, the S models a Shibata nude diamond and the M models a Microline nude diamond. The flagship Umami Red uses a boron cantilever. Each step up changes the stylus profile, which affects how closely it follows the groove.
High and low output versions are offered
Hana's high-output versions, marked H, produce 2.0mV and suit moving magnet phono stages. The low-output versions, marked L, produce 0.5mV, and the ML is 0.4mV. The right match depends on the gain your phono stage provides, so check the output before you order.
Construction uses aluminium and cross-shaped armatures
Hana cartridges use aluminium cantilevers and cross-shaped armatures. The ML and MH models have threaded mounting holes, a frequency range of 12Hz to 45kHz and a recommended tracking force of 2g. Always check the weight and compliance against your tonearm.
