Matching connectors without losing the signal

An adaptor changes the connector, not the signal standard, so it works only where the two formats are electrically compatible. USB-C, DisplayPort and Thunderbolt can all carry HDMI compatible video, but the source device has to support video output over that port in the first place.

Direction matters on several of these. DVI to HDMI works both ways for video but carries no audio, since DVI has no audio channel. DisplayPort to HDMI is usually one way only, from DisplayPort source to HDMI display, unless the adaptor is described as active and bidirectional.

Check the resolution ceiling before buying. Many low cost adaptors are limited to 1080p or to 4K at 30Hz, which is fine for a laptop presentation and not fine for a 4K television. Tell us the device and what you are connecting it to, and we will confirm whether an adaptor will do the job or whether you need a dedicated cable.

HDMI 2.1 offers significantly higher bandwidth than HDMI 2.0 (48Gbps vs 18Gbps), supporting 4K at 120Hz, 8K at 60Hz, Dynamic HDR, and advanced gaming features such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). These upgrades provide smoother visuals and better sound when used with compatible devices.

Yes. HDMI is backward compatible, meaning newer cables work with older HDMI devices. With adapters, HDMI can also connect to DVI, though DVI does not carry audio.

Absolutely. HDMI transmits both digital video and multi-channel audio, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, through a single cable for a clean, high-fidelity connection.
